They can be interesting, teach lessons, and it's nice to see people triumph over adversity. The Boy called "It" was one of those I read and although difficult, it was uplifting. No matter how difficult our lives, we can always find someone somewhere with something worse going on.

First time I've read/heard the expression...had to use a search engine to look-see. Does The Painted Bird qualify? Saw a list of about ten stories shelved as "misery-lit" at Goodreads. I'll have to check out a story. Any recommendations?

DJ-are you talking about "A Child Called It?" Did you read the next two-"The Lost Boy" and "A Man Named Dave?" Dave Pelzer had a speaking engagement around here a few years back and I didn't find out until the day after!! I was so bummed.
