I think I was even more disturbed by the beginning of the book than I was the first time reading it.Me too, Snake. We've had some really good discussions.. and more to come. What a beginning to Mr. Mercedes, eh?
I felt more emotionally attached to Augie and Janice (and baby Patti!) - was heartbroken about their financial situation and was drawn to their compassion for one another as strangers. Then...Comments?
I'd say the first 30 pages contain one of if not my favorite parts of the book. Brady's letter to the ol det. ret. really got me excited for the book.
You've both made valid points. So much happened in these pages, we needed to read them a couple times. The accident felt like getting hit with a 2 by 4 both times, and Brady's letter lets you know just how crazy he is.I think I was even more disturbed by the beginning of the book than I was the first time reading it.
I kept thinking, what a really nice guy, I hope they become a 'couple'.I felt more emotionally attached to Augie and Janice (and baby Patti!) - was heartbroken about their financial situation and was drawn to their compassion for one another as strangers. Then...
Yes - completely deranged.Brady's letter let you know just how crazy he is.
I'm curious Snake, what was it about the letter that you liked or that became one of your favorite parts?I'd say the first 30 pages contain one of if not my favorite parts of the book. Brady's letter to the ol det. ret. really got me excited for the book.
Augie was reminding himself that he wanted to take her out for breakfast - hopefully to celebrate new job prospects and that he was thinking about this again right before they were hit... He wanted to befriend Janice and even thought of presenting themselves as a couple to the job fair people in hopes of bettering their employment chances - just extremely heartbreaking!I kept thinking, what a really nice guy, I hope they become a 'couple'.
Ive always been interested in the psychology of serial killers and such, I guess that's why I'm a mental health counselor. Anyway, I went into mr. Mercedes unsure that I'd like it and the letter was just so raw and deranged I knew then that I was going to like it.I'm curious Snake, what was it about the letter that you liked or that became one of your favorite parts?
