It cost an arm and a leg; a haunted room ( their are 6 others than 217) go for $465( after tax) a night, a standard room goes for $335 (after tax) a night. I live 40 minutes away from the Stanley, but you are going to have a lot of traveling expenses especially coming from Canada and needing lodging for 4-5 days. If you an Andy have an arm and a leg to spare you might stay one night at the Stanley especially if your going to try for room 217. Boulder is a 40 - 60 min drive, Loveland and Longmont 40 - 50 min drive, Lions is 30 - 40 min drive but I don't know how well the town reconstruction is going from major flood damage in 2014. I saw a motel 6 about 5 minutes from the Stanley, but I don't know the cost maybe ill research the cost next week or after Halloween.

Most areas in the hotel are pretty accessible from 10am - 10 pm. Day tours start 10am - 5pm and they will show you the guest floors and outside of haunted rooms, music room, billiards room, the MacGregor room and basement, night ghost tours 6-10 pm will show you the concert hall, music room, billiards room, and MacGregor basement of concert hall and main hotel.

The night your will not allow you on guest floors for obvious reasons the privacy of the guest during the evening, but will show the the concert hall; the Day tour will not show you the concert hall but will tour you through the guest floors and show you the outside of haunted rooms and for obvious reasons that the haunted rooms are rent-able by guest will not show you inside( if you have a nice guest in room 217 or other haunted rooms, like me, they may offer the tour to come into the room and take pictures the hotel will allow you in haunted rooms if the guest invites you in)

The night tour focuses on the supernatural elements of the Stanley history, but does not exclude other information about the Stanley; the day day tour focuses on the history of the Stanley hotel and the Stanley's, but does not exclude supernatural history of the Stanley, the tours are 90 mins - 2 hours

day tours price vary $17-23 Night tour prices vary $25-28

Does King have to approve the hotel linking his brand to this kind of promotion?
He would probably not object and may have given verbal permission when he was there to film the mini-series but I'm not aware of any more formal permission to do this nor does he receive any remuneration for having his name and The Shining references used to promote The Stanley.

When you take the Stanley tour, you find out room 217 has a history before King stayed there: a tragic event happened, there was really a bar tender named Grady, the fire hose spouts were part of the hotel since it was built, the MacGregor room was part of the hotel before it was renovated for The Shining mini series.

Since these were part of the hotel before Stephen wrote them into the shining, the hotel probably has the right to promote them without Stephen Kings aproval.

When the shining mini series was filmed their , Stephen King was their and requested to do architectural changes that the hotel approved; at that time Stephen King and the Stanley hotel probably made agreement about the culture of the Stanley hotel / The Shining and branding

The hotel also mentioned in 1995/1997 Stephen King bought back the movie rights to The shining, possibly making Kubrick unable to have any legal rights of how The Stanley uses/ promotes his movie The Shining

...Boulder Twin Lakes Inn ma'am....
Thankee kindly Sir!

I think I will talk to him again today about it (after I pay our bills on-line).

It would probably be more fun to be closer to other members. Is Deb staying there too, do you know?

One more question - how far is it to the Stanley from the Boulder Twin Lakes Inn?

I thought it was after Kubrick died in 1999? But I am probably getting it wrong. Anyway, I am really impressed with your photos - thanks for sharing them with us!

I think we can only stay the four days, not a whole week. I will know more by end of April/May 1st. There are three ahead of me in seniority so they get to pick their weeks vacation first.

I hope Deb can make it! Andy liked talking with her and her niece.

I was quoted a rate of $260.10 per night for a Queen room and that is the AAA rate.

Like you said, when you factor in airfare, car rental etc. it seems very extravagant. Perhaps the Boulder Twin Lakes is more our cup of tea - we'll follow Giant in his white Jeep if we have to drive!

(haha) GNTLGNT - I remember when we were in Ohio and Andy got frustrated because nate_watkins did not use a turn signal when we were following him)

That's a Scotsman for you! (spent most of his life driving on the wrong side of the road) :belial:

My stay at the Stanley Round Two : The Shining Ball

Last Thursday during my room 217 visit I saw a poster in the main lobby of the Stanley advertising the shining ball which was yesterday and as you have guessed is a shining themed costume ball (costumes required) and judged by MIKE D. MCCARTY, DANIEL KNAUF, JACK KETCHUM, grand prizes for the categories: best, couple, scariest, and best individual costume was $500 cash for each category. Yours truly won best individual costume (topiary lion, made by me, took over 50 hours to make, and started Monday). Mike D McCarty was the judge that discovered me and let me tell me tell the tail of all the heart and soul I put into my costume making; then he too me over to Jack Ketchum and Daniel Knauf. I did indeed get $500 cash (although my joy was from the judges not only being the first to recognize what my costume was, but who also let me have recognition for all the hard work I put into the costume) the cash didn’t go far, it got me a few souvenirs, a payback into my saving account (I borrowed money out of it for costume supplies, and a donation to our buddy PITH.
