Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, one of the leading actors of his generation, who won an Academy Award for his title role in the film "Capote," was found dead in his Manhattan apartment on Sunday in what a New York police source described as an apparent drug overdose.

Hoffman, 46, was found unresponsive on the bathroom floor of his Greenwich Village apartment by police responding to an emergency 911 call, and Emergency Medical Serviceworkers declared him dead on the scene, the New York City Police Department said in a statement. An investigation was ongoing.

I dunno KR,how you can figure someone is the type to use or not,any kind of drug or alcohol..such a shame, but that is life..I remember him as the nasty, not so likeable policeman in the gem of a movie,1994 "Nobody's Fool"..a short part but he was good..

If someone steps in front of a car on purpose--and jumps out of the way over and over and over and then not be fast enough---what would we say? What an idiot? What a moron? What do you expect with such behavior. But instead because he is a celebrity we say "So sad." Why do we romanticise the stupidity of celebrities just because they are famous? I liked his acting too but he was no different than a a junkie in the street--bad choices, bad choices. SK said as much in On Writing.

Wow, harsh. But I understand what you're saying. Personally, if someone was purposely stepping in front of a car over and over again, I would think mental illness, and yes, I would still think it's sad. It's compassion for the frailty of humans. I do think it's sad that even people who appear to have it all are just as fragile as the rest of us. The waste of potential is sad.

Yes it was straight to the point. But, I understand as well. I've long since stopped commenting on a celeb's downfall. They are human. I praise their talents because the news reports and others will kick them to the curb, I won't add to that.

There are many beings that deal with addictions everyday of every kind . . .some are even soccer moms.

I don't have the right to judge them. They already know what they are.
