My pups Cygnus and Caseyanne. Trained 'Dominance down' This sounds alot worse than it was. It became a game. Just pup lay down and you put hands on them and say 'down down'. Oh, you will get struggle at first. Then they relax. Increase the time, each time.
Till ok! Jump up! claps and kisses and treats.

Sounds mean but wasn't.

See I did not post this. so will continue.

Worked out so well for injuries and general health, ear cleanings..
One poor pup got a marrow bone stuck~ around her jaw. How'd she do that? dunno. She laid perfectly still. Tail thumping happy while it was sawed off.
Sawed off. Then happy she had two pieces

Ok, now I am reading bad things about this method. I can just say we loved them very much and it worked happy for all. Now I feel like Mommy Dearest.

eek. My last pup, Maggie. Well, she walked all over me. I looked like a cutter with all the bites and scratches. :apthy: Trainer cost me 400 bucks and I got a water bottle and a bag of marbles. She was wonderful with him.
Could have been in dog olympics.

Me? not so much. Soon as he left. Loved the water bottle for squirts. Not impressed. And ate it. :tounge:

Re submissive down command training-- sensitive subject. There are good methods to "training" a dog, as well as bad methods. I do not like the word train, prefer the word guide. If a particular trainer is using unacceptable training tools, or not being patient, I have issues. There are situations when one may desire a dog to take a down position, and a dog can be guided to understand. How a trainer approached this lesson is where I have concerns.

Exactly. It was in no way like that, and I did not mean to imply it.
It was happy times when they were pups. They looked forward to it .
It was a soothing time for them. zen like and for me too. Calming voice. telling them how good and pretty they were.
Thumpy tails.

Sorry to have bought this up.

not_nadine ---- I should have quoted Swiftdogs post. You did nothing wrong, NN. Dog companions/owners usually train gently and with kindness. My thoughts were more toward "trainers" who use inappropriate training tools, and on a time schedule often over do the training. I know your love for dogs and in no way meant for you to feel you were a monster. Maggie was a handful- a lovable handful.

Oh thanks. I never got there with the Maggie. Sure was and sure she still is - the stinker. Best I got with her was to have a squirt bottle and gloves and a hoodie on. Let her go at me. hee. I gave up. I was submissive. We sure had a good time. I screamed alot. And went to work with black eyes.

Oh man the black labs got the training. I would not have been able to do that, it was the ex. that kept it up. Wonderful dogs. Looking at the picture on my wall of them now.

Some of you may know, but it's been about a month since my dad passed. Mom is good some days and bad some days. They have a house way out in the country, so it's not unheard of for a stray dog to wander up, but it has been a very long time since one has. Until last week.

Meet Lucy. Vet says she's probably a year old. Showed up just when my mom needed her.

I believe that. I believe things DO show up in your life when you need them most. We just have to pay attention and accept them.

Great gift for her!

Lucy is gorgeous and she will be a great companion for your Mom. Perhaps Dad has a hand in this (watching from above?) - that's so nice!
