Use powdered detergents....these brands are actually better for the life of your washer. The liquids all contain oil that sorta gums up the works after a while.
They don't usually work that great with the minerals often found in well water, though. Have to use liquid or the powder just clumps up, even more so with the dish washer.

I'm not for sure its true but I've heard that the oil in dryer sheets will build up in the dryer and eventually leave little drops of oil on your clothes.
Not sure about the oil drops on clothes but I have heard that the lint filter screen will develop a film on it from dryer sheets that makes the dryer less efficient so you should wash off the filter every so often to make sure it allows proper air flow.

I didn't know this - I am going to go run my filter under hot water right now!

Thanks for all the replies. Sorry I was away from the thread, just busy, but I think the linkage to the cheese thread is hilarious!

Believe me, to the person who mentioned this -- I am indeed challenged in the packaged-goods arena!

The detergent is pretty good, but it still does the trickling thing. I think that may just be normal? I'm thinking, just based on physics, how could they design something like detergent not to keep on dispensing if the bottle is inverted. Of course, it is just a trickle, so the design solved some of the problem, but as the reservoir fills again, it will just keep dripping, not sure there is any way around that. I was just fascinated by the idea of a pre-set dose. I'll see if I can do anything differently (although I have to always remember to open the cap away from me, as advised on the package, as liquid in this particular cap can shoot out sometimes under pressure).

Thanks again!

I don't trust self-dispensing detergents. I don't like HE washers either. I like to add detergent to a filled washer and let it agitate a while before I add the clothes. I'm a bit ocd about evenly washed and rinsed clothes lol.

Wait, what? You're supposed to do that? I throw all the detergent stuff in the bottom, cram in the clothes, spin the dial, and run.

...spin the dial?...have you ever gotten 1/2 a car or a trip to Hawaii?....

No, but one time I got a free swimming pool. It wasn't Olympic-sized, it was exactly the size of my basement. Instead of inviting blue water, it was filled with soap bubbles and boxes of our stuff. You can bet I was jumping up and down and screaming THAT day!
