“How tall are you? So I can know in advance how far to step back when you fall down!”

“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee. Rumble, young man, rumble.” — 1964, before fighting Sonny Liston.

“Inside of a ring or out, ain’t nothing wrong with going down. It’s staying down that’s wrong.”

“Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.”

“Friendship is the hardest thing in the world to explain. It’s not something you learn in school. But if you haven’t learned the meaning of friendship, you really haven’t learned anything.”

...well, allow me to be the contrarian.....he was a draft dodger-period....there were many young men who didn't wish to go to the other side of the world and fight for a people they didn't give a rat's ass about, but they did-because that's what the law required....you could be against the war and still try to watch your fellow soldiers backsides....I thought and still do, that our involvement in Vietnam was asinine, but if I had been of age-I would have gone.....philosophy/religious belief is one thing, the law is another....Ali was able to pull it off because of celebrity status, and now is looked on as a hero...I'm not dumping on him as a purveyor of the "sweet science", no doubt he is a legend there...and his later work is admirable, but using the cloak Islam as he did-still rankles....

I understand what you are saying, but did you read his quote above about being drafted? I don't blame him one bit. Rich, middle class white kids were hiding in college (which the poor could not do) or being tucked away in safe office jobs in the service (not all, but enough) and like he said, blacks were being treated like dirt, but yet they are good enough to go fight your (America) war?

I give him props for standing for his beliefs.

....yes, I read the quote and carefully....but, I still can't forgive him for it....must be my own character flaw.....and I further agree with what you said, many ducked service-but hundreds of thousands didn't....maybe it's because I come from a family who many who served that colors my perceptions....

I get it. but I get his thinking too. I have a family filled with service people also and I know it was difficult because most saw action. Did he go to jail? If he did, well that's what happened when you refused to serve, he made his choice and stood by it.

I hear ya but at least he paid a price. We've had many others that paid no price and went on to hold high office.

I'm not really disagreeing with you about the draft dodger label but I am saying that Ali paid some price for it (stripped of his career for 3 1/2 years in his prime). The rich and powerful did it with deferments and paid no price.

....understood....for me, it is one of those memories that has remained unchanged-even as I've grown older and greyer...I just can't shake it and it's probably due to my Uncle being in Nam for 8 years....
