...essentially, his only punishment WAS the loss of three prime career years, since his conviction was overturned....he was a hell of a fighter and a combatant in the Civil Rights battle. I applaud him for that, but I also wonder how much quicker his health might have declined had he been banged around that much longer?...
As far as boxing ability, I think the thing that made Ali so tough (and probably ruined his health) was his ability to rapidly recuperate from devastating punches. During his career, there were probably more serious bad asses in the heavy weight division than at any other time and he really took a lot of serious punches. Most people that talk about his boxing skills will talk about his speed but he was one tough dude.
Much as I love you big man, but I've got to agree with Dana on this one. I know I'm not an an American and I'm not 100% up on the Vietnam war, but from what I've seen it was a very unjust war. If it helps, I think draft dodgers in the the first world war were justified, for me that was rich cousins using poor people as cannon fodder to fight. The 2nd world war, for me was the only just war for conscription. Back to Ali, a guy whose recent forefathers, in the scale of things, had been forceably taken to America and enslaved!!! Tbh I'd be brave enough to go to war, but too chicken to defy de man. Totally understand your hatred of his Islam thing, for an obviously intelligent man, The Nation of Islam proper brainwashed him, but understandable with the slave (name) issue. Lots of memories over the weekend stirred up. Watching him on Wide World of Sports with Cosell. Being glued to the radio for updates on the fights that weren't a live broadcast. The Olympic flame and his fight with that dreadful disease. Boxer showman activist all. I hope he is finally free and I'll take ringside seats for Ali/ Frazier 4.
I never been a big boxing fan, brutal sport, but Ali was so much more than a boxer. Actually one of the things i respect him for most is not going to Vietnam . Regardless of where you stand on that issue i respect a man, or woman, standing up for his principles knowing it is gonna cost him. He was, at times, very far out on one wing. He wanted the coloured people of the US to have their own nation within the US because they were so unfair treated. I think this started after he won his olympic gold as a teenager and was Very proud over that and what he had done for his country. When he got home he discovered that noone cared and that he was even more unfairly treated. He throw the medal in the Ohioriver and never looked back.
RIP Ali. You were a great human and a great boxer.
A larger than life icon. Anyone going to the funeral procession in Louisville? It is apparently open to the public and not far from several SK events this week. Would be cool if King went.
