It seems like more and more icons from the 80s are gone. I saw Ronald Reagan a couple of times in person. A larger than life figure. The guy had an amazing presence. Oddly the very last time I saw him he was carrying a surf board under his arm. He was speaking at Pepperdine University after his presidency. He must have been 80 or so at the time. They gave him the surfboard as a kind of gag gift because the school is in Malibu on the beach. You would expect him to sort of hand it off to some lackey at his age but instead he hoisted the thing under his arm, gave a wave, and left the auditorium carrying it. Pretty amazing. He had been a lifeguard earlier in his life but just a small example of how he knew how to work a crowd.
