Those not from this area may recognize him as "the crack smokin' mayor". But he did a better job on crack than the current mayor and the mayor before him.
Chris Farley would have been great playing him on SNL. He seemed like a wild man. Perhaps we need more politicians like that and fewer of the ones we get. At least they would be more interesting.

Never before has this honour been given to a past Toronto mayor. Regardless of the fact that he was actually in rehab during the election, I think he would have won, if he hadn't dropped out. Even with the diagnosis of cancer, I think he still could have won.
Yes, I am from this area too and agree he was a damn good Mayor. He was the people's Mayor and worked
hard them. Sure, he made mistakes ( a few real dandies) but it didn't seem to stop him or slow him down
from doing what was right for his constituents.

You know, after the police chief having him followed around, no charges were ever laid. For so many reasons I love Chief Saunders and I'm glad he took over.
This video shows Ford Nation. Who the people he helped were.
I am surprised to read these kudos. From this side of the border, seeing what little press I did, he seemed like a cartoonish, comical figure. But I'm happy to learn that my impression was in error, and I'm sorry for the loss to his family, friends, and city.

I don't actually remember if I voted for him when he ran for mayor. But I do remember he kept his promises. He got rid of a tax on vehicles. And he stood up to council when they wanted to do stupid things....which was a lot of the time.
Bob Barker came to town and said we were being mean to elephants...or something. Said we should not have the elephants in our zoo. He spoke to city council (cameras rolling OF COURSE) and many councillors went OMG IT'S BOB FREAKING BARKER. HE MUST BE FREAKING RIGHT. And they followed his plans to ship our elephants somewhere without checking the place out. Mayor Ford and his brother argued against it. Not necessarily that the elephants wouldn't be better off being sent somewhere, but don't just blindly ship them where BOB BARKER says. Our zoo is one of the best in North America. And it almost lost it's accreditation over that.
Our (then) chief of police wasted an awful lot of time and money having him followed around...by a helicopter I believe. And after a year, no charges were laid. It was all quietly dropped before the diagnosis. The Toronto Star hated him, especially Robin. She is a "reporter" who slithers in dirt. I actually stopped even clicking free articles in that paper due to an article she wrote long before she had Rob Ford in her sights. Disgusting lack of work ethic.
But he also did a lot of things people were rightly upset about. He did not want the rainbow flag hung outside city hall during gay pride week. (That's not the mayor or city councils choice, and it did hang.) He set about removing bike lanes....a very hot topic in this city. Some hate when they put them in, some hate when they remove them.
He also refused to attend the pride parade. I refuse to attend it for some of the reasons he refused to participate. There is an anti-Isreal group that has a float in it. There are floats with completely naked adults on it (some of the men with rings). These are things other mayors ignore and participate in the parade.
So, while the comical figure you saw was not incorrect....there was more to him.
