I am fascinated by sign language. Always have been since I was a little girl and my grandma taught me a two-handed alphabet (which I forgot).

And of course, that's how we talked to each other in class when we couldn't talk in school, using the one handed alphabet.

The two little boys I watch both learned some basic baby sign language, which was so great because we could communicate before their verbal language evolved.

I think it's a beautiful language and someday, I am going to go back to school to properly learn it.

And I think Walter Oobleck's wife is a sign language interpreter.

I took a couple of classes at the local community college, and knew enough to use it with my daughter as a baby. You are right, it is sooo helpful!

You should look around for some classes to take. I haven't practiced in years. I have forgotten so much!

Good for you! I would love to. I just find it so beautiful. Anytime I go some place where they have a sign language interpreter, I end up watching them more than the actual speaker!

Have you ever seen this video? This girl was deaf all her life, then got cochlear implants.
This shows the first time she hears herself.

I took three semesters when my daughter was a toddler. She learned signs, too. The day care complained to me once that she never apologized, just rubbed her chest in a circle with her fist. I tried not to laugh as I explained that she was apologizing.

Loved sign and wanted to go into an interpreter program but there was none close enough. :(

My son was non-verbal until he was 6 yrars old. With the help of a couple therapists, we taught him many basic signs and life was so much easier for all of us. He's now 12, but occasionally when he talks, he throws in a sign...especially when saying "sorry" :)

I've taken a couple of sign language classes at the local community college, too. It's a lot of fun to sign. I think you might like it.

Oh, My bestest friend from 1st grade and I learned little sign language after a incident with a deaf boy in a pool.

We have used it so much during the years. Like you said, during tests, later in bars we went to and
(spell out, what a jerk-off)
or other things, if we were getting hit on. you know how to do it. It was fun, private language, we could do it on the sly, too. That was a while ago.

Ah, we still use it, for all kinds of things.
