My phone wallpaper is Eminem, and if a student happens to see it, they are shocked. I have connected to several students this way though, and it's great to have that common ground. (They work harder for me coz they think I'm "cool!")
One student who behaves badly for all the other teachers acts like an angel in my classroom, esp when she found out I know all the words to Eminem's songs and Fetty Wap's! It really does help to like what they like.I've said for years that I don't like rap/hip-hop, but I've loved Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly since it first came out. I had someone challenge me on that today, and realized that I haven't even listened to rap for longer than it takes to switch the station since N.W.A. was hot. Also realized that I've been making snap judgments and assumptions, which I despise. So. Rap/hip-hop all day today. And I liked Eminem a lot, Kanye West a little less but more than I thought I would. And I still love Butterfly.Love it! You go girl!

While on the phone today, speaking with a very irritating person in the "service" department, I really wanted to say something random. After being transferred for the __th time, the employee gave me a 1-800 # and asked if I wanted to be transferred yet again to a different department to speak to Wanda. I don't know Wanda and I'm sure she's a lovely person, but I just wanted to say Oh gawd no. What would I want to talk to her for??! Just to hear what the response would be.
