Just speculating but it sounds like he may have got out of his car and forgot to put it in park. I did something similar once but managed to jump back in (barely) before I got pinned between a wall and the truck. Me, who complains about everyone being distracted by their cell phones was talking on my cell phone when I did this. I was in a pickup truck and that's probably the only reason I was able to get back in once it started moving. There is a much bigger door on a truck than a car. After it was over, I realized how lucky I was as I could have been pinned between the truck and the wall of the building I was next to.

Also, I knew a girl in high school whose father was killed in a freak accident. I think it was the 1979 Ford pickups that would jump out of park (there was a big recall for this back then). He put his truck in park (with it running) and walked around behind the truck and it the trucked jumped out of park into reverse and ran him over.

Oh man, how awful.

I'm glad you weren't hurt.

Just north of Duma Key
Los Angles Police Department spokesperson Jenny Hauser released a statement, confirming some details of his death:

“On Sunday, June 19 at 1:10 in the morning, a fatal traffic collision occurred. It was the result of the victim’s own car rolling backwards down his steep driveway, pinning him against a brick mailbox pillar and security fence. The victim was on his way to meet his friends for rehearsal. And when he didn’t show up, his friends went to his house, where they found him deceased by his car. It appeared he had momentarily exited his car leaving it in the driveway.”

Reminds me a bit of the story of Thelma Todd who died back in the 30s. Freakish apparent accident where she was locked out of her home - which is still standing on PCH in California - and walked back to her garage where she went to sleep with the motor running on her car to keep warm. She was asphyxiated by the fumes.
