Books are Magic in Brooklyn NYC was the first time I have seen Stephen King and this is something I have wanted since I first read the Stand back in the 1970's. I had tickets to another King event in Boston but had a family emergency and I couldn't go.

We had so much fun, from the time we got there (go early unless there is assigned seating; people at the NY event started arriving at 9:00 (!) that morning for a 7:00 event). We got there about 5:00 and had planned to go earlier but we were confused at the Subway! Hahaha.

This event was everything I had hoped it would be and more. Both Stephen and his son Owen were awesome--they are down to earth, funny, had so many interesting stories and it was wonderful hearing them read from the book.

One of my strong philosophies is that the key to happiness is to lower your expectations, so I had zero expectations that I would receive a signed book. For me, it was the event--seeing this author whom I have admired so much (and who has saved me from depressions at times) and anything else was cherries on top.

As it turned out, both my husband and I received signed books, but when we were leaving, there was a couple whom we'd gotten to know a bit that we walked out with. Neither of them received a signed book and so my husband (such a sweetie) traded one of ours for one of their non-signed one. For some reason, that made the night even more magical--seeing their happy faces. Then each couple had their signed book. We didn't need two. It made their night--but it made ours more.

For all of your lucky people who are going to be at the upcoming events--enjoy and soak it all in. I would go again in a heartbeat if I could. Cheers!

So excited for tonight!!! Can't wait to see my favorite author and get my hands on Sleeping Beauties! I hope I meet a lot of cool King fans there.

Have fun! I'm still on a cloud of magic since I went on Tuesday, 9/26. It was pure magic. And then we had fantastic sushi afterward, which made for a perfect evening. It was really fun hearing them speak.

i'm glad that folks are enjoying their tour stops, and i can't wait for mine. one thing bugging me though, is people who have already put signed books on ebay for 3-400 dollars. i find that to be rather opportunistic of them, to say the least. so many people would have loved to have gone to one of these and have a chance at one of those, and that immediate price jack up . . . smh.

At the NY event, I literally seen people getting their signed book walking out door, sitting it on the sidewalk to take a picture and it was up on ebay before everyone had even left the building and gotten their books!! Evidence of this can be seen with a quick ebay search and the photo that pops up with the signed copy sitting on sidewalk. Now, I honestly do not care if people sell their books, they paid for ticket and attended so its theirs to do as they want. I have also sold extra copies of signed books I have gotten as well, kinda nice when it pays for your trip and time off. But if I had only gotten one that would be on my shelf, I have to have at least one signed copy for myself. I just find it funny that people cant even wait to get home or in the car, gotta get that thing on ebay as fast as they can. lol.

Takes a certain kind of person to do this. I am sure that made that couples night. Some guy somewhere did say "Ka is a wheel" :friendly_wink::encouragement:

Sleeping Beauties gave me an idea. I could market and sell Ladies Sleeping Beauty Cocoons.

'Stay restful and avoid unwanted advances.'

And I could include pepper spray with every purchase.

I wonder if I need to get permission from Stephen and Owen? :p

I don't really care about them selling it, it's the markup that strikes me as a bit jerky

Well I have to ask, what do you expect them to go for? I mean there is a value for the signatures. If its an outrageous asking price then no one will buy it. But if they are selling for that much, well how can you blame them? There has been a determined value that the consumer chooses. I mean if I post my extra book for 10G the chances of selling that book are pretty much none. But $400 more than likely someone will be willing to pay that. So should I sell it for $50 just because I don't want you to think I am a jerk?

...this is how I felt in Dayton, Ohio when Tracy and I got to see him during the EOW tour....we each received our books and hers happened to be the signed one of the two and that just iced the cake of the evening for me....the pure unmitigated joy that a few strokes of a pen brought to her.....

I would *never* sell my only copy of a SK book, but then that's just me. I don't need the money (my husband and I have worked hard our whole lives and are now kind of living the dream) and so I would probably just give it to someone that I know would love it but who couldn't afford it. I've also seen the eBay ads--I get it--but I also wish that there were some way to verify that TRUE SK fans could go to the events and not just people who want to make money off a signed books. But I'll stop. :)

We were so happy, we don't need the money (we're not uber wealthy but comfortable enough to avoid having to sell on eBay--thank the Goddess) and I love making people happy. It changed their entire aura. It was awesome.

Never said you where, but If you think a mark up is "jerky" I was wondering what you place the value of a signed book to be? What would not be jerky?

well for a book that came out 5 minutes ago and the book tour still actually going on, 10 x (or more, depending on prices) what someone paid for it originally seems excessive and overly opportunistic. i'm not trying to assign a value for everyone to follow. but these are exceedingly different from special editions that go to the effort of making special covers and artwork and the like. and that's the last i'll say on the subject, as the point has already been made.

If you attend the event from out of town, as many do, then the cost is a day off from work, driving or flying for hours, buying one or more tickets at $40 per, maybe staying at a hotel that night ($100 or more) etc. So the cost of attending is much more than simply buying the book at retail. I honestly don't see how anyone makes much money even selling it at $200 or more. And if there are fans who can't attend, then having folks willing to sell copies is a good thing. I personally have never sold a signed copy of any SK book. They are too damned difficult to get. But I can understand that there is a legitimate market of buyers and sellers because the books have value.
