This is a noir mystery film where most of the characters are high school students. The movie is like an old detective movie but in a modern setting with young actors. This is from the same director that did Looper.

On the heels of River's Edge would be Jonathan Kaplan's Over the Edge. Another one of those movies about teenagers that scares the crap out of me as a parent. That could be another thread entirely.
Both are excellent movies.
Most of the characters in The Rivers Edge could have been my classmates in HS.
Time Bandits is pretty well known, I was actually tempted to include some other Terry Gilliam movies on the list but they're not really obscure. The only one that comes close to being obscure is Baron Munchausen, oh and maybe that Jabberwock movie he made that I've never seen.
I don't know that Memento ever made much of a wave, but I thought it was a brilliant movie.
I rented Memento when it first came out on DVD based on a review. I was so blown away that I ended up viewing it three times in the two days that I had it. It's still a fixture in my Netflix queue. I love it that much. Ironically, I think everyone that I encouraged to watch it ended up hating it. Go figure.
We watched it at another couple's home. They had a home theater set up. They were the kind of folks (maybe you guys are too) who buy a movie without knowing anything about it. They had bought Memento. So we sat in their home theater and watched it.
I was enthralled. A movie that made me think! My brain was fully engaged, beginning to end, which just about never happens in a movie. I sat there, scene after regressive scene, trying to figure it out, where they were going - or had been. I've never been so integrated into a plot of a movie, except maybe when I saw LA Confidential for the third time.
When the movie finished, Grandma had enjoyed herself, I was transported, and our hosts got up from their couch saying something on the order of, "Sorry we wasted your time." They were lost and hated it. They were astonished by my approbations.

The only thing movie teasers/trailers do these days is spoil all the major plot pointsNever heard of that film but man does that make me miss the days when movie posters weren't just a bunch of actors' cropped heads photo-shopped together.
....and I’m a lot of cases, are the best parts of the movie....The only thing movie teasers/trailers do these days is spoil all the major plot points
For those of you who like more serious animated movies, I would really recommend the Studio Ghibli film "Princess Mononoke", it's entirely hand drawn/painted, and is a magical film. (Not the kind of animated film you can show kids though). For the best experience I would recommend watching the original Japanese version with subtitles.
So did Hitch. Not exactly shot for shot, the remake had Norman looking through a peephole.
