Depends on what shark it is, doesn't it? That shark looked rather small so probably not a maneater. And the diver probably knew that. I doubt he would have petted a great White shark.

That's easily an 8 to 10 foot Tiger Shark. One of the most aggressive sharks in the ocean. Most attacks in Hawaii are attributed to Tiger Sharks. Tiger Sharks will attack and try to eat just about anything. Really not a shark you want to free dive or interact with. Just ask any surfer who has had an encounter with them.

One of these days a diver is going to be fatally attacked trying to do stuff like that. Not the shark's fault. They are wild animals and should be treated as such.

I would have enjoyed seeing this clown lose a digit or two for that stupid stunt.

The Tiger Shark is in the top 3 of the most dangerous sharks in the world. Free diving with them or trying to interact with them is just plain foolishness.

The Bull Shark is the most dangerous. Severe case of cranky pants on that species. Extra special bonus- they can survive in fresh water too! This is the species responsible for the Matawan Creek attacks in 1916 that the novel Jaws is loosely based on. Some of the attacks happened several miles inland in the fresh water part of the creek. There was even a Shark Week special a few years back where they guy giving an interview about bull sharks, and standing in a lagoon full of them :facepalm_smiley:, is attacked and almost dragged out to sea. All caught on film.

Number two is the Great White. If you look like a seal from below (surfers I'm talking to you!) you are at risk for an exploratory bite. Of course a nibble from a 12 - 20 ft. fish with a mouth full of dagger shaped teeth is not anyone's idea of a good time.

Again not the shark's fault. You enter the ocean, you are at risk. No different than if you were strolling along the African Plains and were attacked by a lion......

If you are correct in saying that it is a Tiger shark then you're right! That diver is an idiot. Tigers not to be played with. I know they can be extremely dangerous. Just assumed that an experienced Diver would not pet a shark unless the odds were in his favour.

You seem to know alot about sharks. Is the Hammerhead one of the maneaters or is that a misconception?

Old news if you visit the KaTet Cantina, but in case you've missed my personal encounter with a ssssshark. The lifeguard shouted us out of the water while we were in Destin - it was an 8' bull shark. Here's the good news, they have radios, those lifeguards do, and they radio each other with sightings, like "Hey, there's an 8' bull shark heading your way, clear the water, pass it on"

Air Jaws comes to Chatham, MA!

This just happened today. It's the first time I have heard of, or seen, a Great White breach in the Northern Atlantic. Pretty awesome! That's one lucky seal :icon_eek:

Now this guy is on his way to find the Orca........
I know I shouldn't choose (Shark's gotta eat) but... yay for the underdog [seal]!

Y'all know I'm Team Shark ;)

Me too. It's better the seal gets eaten by a shark then being clubbed to death by a fisherman. Which is what was happening to them before they became a protected species.

Seals got protected. Sharks got protected. Our Sharks. Seals in the water, sharks in the water...... Farewell and adieu to you fair Spanish sealies. Farewell and adieu you seals of Spain. For we've received orders for to sail back to Boston. So, nevermore shall we see you again..... (to paraphrase the one and only Captain Quint)
