Sorry 'bout the delay. Busy.

There are before- and after-school clubs for kids to go to - my mom works in one - but there's no actual 'guidance' there. It's childminding, but without any real power. For example, if a child misbehaves - say Kid A smacks Kid B in the face with a building block - there are strict guidelines governing how that child can be dealt with, and under no circumstances can the minders use so much as a sharp tone. That's considered to be 'getting in their faces' and can land the adult in very hot water.
The real reason for the softly, softly approach comes down to one thing: the fear of being sued. Schools and teachers were getting hit with a lot of suits about 10 or so years ago (the country seemed to go mad with the 'compensation culture' - people received payouts in all kinds of situations where you'd have thought common sense would have prevented the 'accident' in the first place, etc). Because of that, and heavier than normal payouts being awarded in cases of 'emotional distress', instructions were issued that effectively meant that kids could turn around to teachers and abuse them, but the teacher wasn't allowed to do or say anything back that might result in 'distress'.
Some kids, but by no means all, naturally took advantage, and in some cases it even extends to the home. I've heard of cases where a parent has issued an instruction or forbidden a certain thing, and the kid's threatened to call Childline and report them for 'abuse' (which cheapens the genuine suffering of other kids and demeans the charity's cause).
Sounds like a sad state of things. That would make it very difficult to raise a child if you can't issue instructions. Lead by example certainly doesn't work always. Thanks for the info. I had no idea about all this.

Well now, they would have to ban the news now wouldn't they? I mean how much crazy stuff is right there on the news, even public stations,
right there for kids to see, even if you don't have cable.

Now you see why I haven't owned a tv for about 4 years now?

If I'm going to want to watch something, I want to pick it.

Netflix..7.99 and I'm like a kid in a candy store...I know off topic but,
really..once I again I'm repeating myself..

"Gee, um, if I didn't read Stephen King's books in my english class, I wouldn't
have gotten A's on my book reports".

Seriously I watch some crazy films and read crazy things, but real life,
I been connecting and talking with Grandmasters of Martial Arts and
learning more about life.

It is a balance.

Maybe people just can't handle life and I know it's not an excuse, but
then they got point at a blame at something.

I think most people on this board probably are into heavy metal and Stephen King,
but they aren't going out shooting up people and such.

I think they need to go deeper into a root of problem and not put blame
where it doesn't belong.

I'm guilty when it comes to Stephen King .... but heavy metal just count me out! I'm more of a Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel with some Michael Jackson thrown in to mix it up kind of guy

Some people are just wired wrong. The Columbine killers were not only not apprehensive about what they were going to do (including killing themselves) but were absolutely giddy when the time came. I don't know if they have ever released the Basement Tapes but they are apparently very sobering. There is something very wrong with those kinds of people. The fact that they are drawn to certain types of music and books isn't surprising. However, it's not the books or music that are causing their violent outbursts.

..Proximity makes these things seem much more real and frightening but I will be the first to say there has to be something fundamentally wrong with you to begin with if even thinking of doing these things crosses your minds.

I'm not a psychologist or anything like that but I feel all of this touchy feely crap we are forcing on our kids these days has perhaps had a different impact than intended. You can't keep score at soccer games. Everyone gets a ribbon on field day. Everyone wins and no one loses.
Then one day you are introduced into the real world where you will get eaten alive if you believe that fairy tale. Some adjust and handle it just fine. Others might grab a gun and climb a clock tower. Or I could be as far off base as the folks that want to report on what kind of music the kid was listening to and what he was reading.

Therein lies part of the answer to how some young adults deal with stress these days. They weren't taught how to be sporting losers when they were little; their teachers were too focused on including everyone, leaving no child untested - I meant behind. So yeah, they flip out when they're told "no" or lose a game or are rejected by the pretty girl for a date.

I don't believe music taste has much to do with the psychology of a serial killer's mind. If that were the case, then we should be afraid of most of the population. Look at what Hannibal Lecter listened to: Bach. (The Goldberg Variations will never be the same for me.)

It only goes to show that we are much brighter people than most news media types. We can spot quality writing. They are the same type of dumb arses that think all poems should rhymn.

I think sometimes some can fart up news then some of the media today.

The media just show stuff that we already tons of things about or they just want to shove things down
our throats that we rather not care about.

You here too much about "bad" of society and not "good".

Or on the internet, who's dating who, who's doing who, what style of clothing someone is wearing,
like really, who cares about that stuff, and that's starting to come to be more mainstream media.

Sad.
