Great story. I agree with all the other comments in this (old) thread: Shift is simply put a very entertaining collection of tales. An English teacher who also taught creative writing used to read this in his class, as well as The Man Who Loved Flowers.
Are the photos in the thread from a short-film version?
Small disagreement with the comment on Last Rung...honestly, that didn't do a lot for me. I think King had said once that he had to get a rid of a story in the collection because of length, and he chose Suffer the Little Children. Rung would have been my choice. Maybe it would have worked better if it was done this way: been a long, long time since I've read it, but assuming this makes sense, I would have liked it given if you fell off the last rung and there was no hay, you disappeared...maybe into the Tower! Time for an update (I say with humor). Also, considering the idea of cutting stories, maybe King should write one where an author has to cut a story from a collection and then the story comes to life! Then again, should I write it? Probably wouldn't be as good, so maybe not...
