I dunno how old I was, five or six? I was riding around in New Orleans with my parents and I just remember asking from the back seat, "Santa isn't real is he" and one of them confirming my suspicions... I'm kinda with Sunny though about how to talk about the whole Santa thing if I ever had kids of my own, although it's bordering on too late for that now....

I was about 8 or 9 when I got up in the middle of the night Xmas Eve and found my folks putting gift under the tree. They tried to convince me the next morning that Santa had been there but I wasn't having any of it. I did keep my mouth shut for my younger brother and sister.

I had a big brother who was a bit of a bully. Christmas morning, he opened his stocking and said "thanks mom" and she was half asleep and said "you're welcome" and he smirked at me. Couldn't let me believe when he knew the truth, and he was four years older than me...kind of unfair. But, since I chose to ignore it, and the whole conversation completely woke mom up....I continued getting Santa presents, and he didn't.

As for my kids, it was actually funny how the oldest found out.

I was babysitting his best friend. They got into an argument about whether Santa was real or not.

Santa is not real. It's just your mom.

You know my mom. You really think she buys all those extra presents?

<scratching head>Maybe in your family it's your dad.

So, you think it's parents that are Santa, the tooth-fairy, and the Easter Bunny?

NO! The Easter Bunny is REAL!

<laughing and hopping like a bunny>So, there's a giant rabbit that hops all around the world laying chocolate eggs that we eat, but no big fat man that has little people making toys.

They were only 6, but in that moment my son knew. But, since we were all laughing, I guess it was a good way to find out. And the look on his friend's face was priceless. That was when the friend realized the Easter bunny wasn't real either.
