Hi!

Has anyone watched or planning to watch The Babadook?

IMDb

A single mother, plagued by the violent death of her husband, battles with her son's fear of a monster lurking in the house, but soon discovers a sinister presence all around her.

It looks pretty good.

(WARNING! Some disturbing images.)

I'm gonna see if I can find someone to watch this with AND someone to spend the night in the house after I watch. Ha!

Peace.

Steve tweeted this about it: "THE BABBADOOK: Deeply disturbing and highly recommended. You don't watch it so much as experience it."

I've heard good things from other people, as well.

Cool. :blues:

Thank you!

I found this:

William Friedkin, director of The Exorcist, was quoted as saying, “I’ve never seen a more terrifying film than THE BABADOOK.

They're even doing a pre order to get the "book". 80 bucks and since I haven't yet seen the movie I don't know if I want to spend that kind of cash.

So I watched this last weekend. I think I'm in the minority here but I wasn't all that excited about it. I think the hype had me way too, well, hyped up. I liked it but didn't love it. The acting was great, some imagery worked but I just didn't find it scary at all.

At first I thought the babadook was a metaphor for Moms sanity and didn't really exist and then she is keeping it as a pet in the basement. oooookay. Perhaps she really is insane. The book was cool though!Still not dropping 80 bucks on it.

Thanks for posting.

The way I saw it:

Babadook is her depression and slow descent into madness. Fighting her depression/monster. If I am correct, that might be why some people see it as so horrifying. Watching someone's mental illness unfold is/can be, horrifying. And unlike a make-believe monster, there's the very real horror of mental illness...

( I caught a lot of flack from some family and friends because it wasn't a *horror* movie. :) )

The mom keeping Babadook in the basement and feeding it. Mom knows she was able to fight off her mental illness/monster THIS time. But it's always there. Just under the surface. And by feeding it, she is acknowledging it's existence and trying to appease it and keep it at bay.

OH!!!! When the son and mom are at the basement door and he asks, "When do I get to see it?" and she answers, "Maybe when you're older." :icon_eek: Oh, psych!!!!

I saw that as a nod to how mental illness can be genetic and because the son saw her behavior, he might emulate her behavior???

Either that or I'm totally wrong.

Well, since you put it that way......wow. You really made me look at it in a whole new light. I almost want to re watch it from your point of view because it makes it so much more valid. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on it.

I think from things I had heard I was expecting a more creepy, jump scare type of film. Something like Insidious, a ghost story of sorts. Definitely more of a psychological mind bender than straight up horror.
