WTH. What is wrong with people? I'm glad they at least found it and got it back. Pawn shop owners need to be held accountable somehow for accepting stolen merchandise. Yes, I know they can't always know, but there has to be some sort of way of regulating this better. What? They just turn their heads and it's okay that what they don't know they can't be held accountable for? Maybe everyone who pawns something should have to give fingerprints and take a damn picture. HA!

Let's see how long it takes for the privacy folks to blow their minds on that.

One of my niece's purse was stolen when she was in her hospital room after giving birth to her son. One minute it was there and then next minute it was in the hands of a man running out the door and down the hall. She didn't even have time to push the button for the nurse! It happens just that fast.

Here one has to show their picture ID's here but maybe some pawn shop owners let it pass cause they are not honest.

Have you seen the type of Security people they employ in hospitals. Fatties, more often than not ex-cops who retired for whatever reason, the one's at John Hunter Hospital look reasonably fit.
...as an RN that has worked in an acute care setting, most smaller hospitals have a contract with a local security agency to provide officers-and as you say, they are not the most physically imposing specimens-hell, we had a combative patient on my floor one night, tearing up his room...Security was called and the responding officer looked at me and said "What do you think we should do???", after a beat and a long stare, I replied "I don't know what you're gonna do, but I KNOW what I'm gonna do. I'm about to knock this SOB out!!"....sadly, budget constraints dictate security quality to a lot of hospitals and they don't want to pay for good quality officers, it would eat their profits away. Not that the small town fellers are a bad lot, but they do earn their Barney Fife accolades...having said that, other facilities DO pay for trained and armed personnel, BUT-they can't be everywhere at all times...and when a floor is extremely busy, it's nigh on impossible to pick out a face that shouldn't be there...

The security at any public hospital here in New South Wales-as far as I know-are employees of the State Government. So, they have to some background. Technically, all cops and employees of the State Government in that line of work have to have a physical once a year. But I've seen cops walking around who couldn't run up to their local McDonalds. It's a cursory physical, otherwise half the cops would be out of a job. It's bad though. There's this 'ice' thing going around that makes users go off their head. I've seen it on TV, what they have to deal with in ER. Padded cells and all that.

Some of the security stations in the hospitals here in Edmonton look like cop shops. I feel very secure. They are on the ball and I would not be afraid to lay down my head in any of our centres. Emerg is even more tightly watched with cams and presence.
