Books over 1000 pages scare me. I don't have that kind of patience.
It doesn't feel that long, even the uncut (which I recommend also). My guess is because it's an ensemble story, so it's like multiple books woven together, in a way. I do understand your reticence; life is short. But I love The Stand.

I got this beautiful book last week, (someone not me lost my first copy of The Stand ) . The second Stephen King story I have read ( The first story was The Dark Tower series ). I'm exited for the re read.

Bring the Grandchildren, this is a wonderful wolf and wildlife reserve, and the tours are fantastic, I have been there twice. At the end of the tour everybody howls, and the wolves howl in response.

Interesting! Grandma and I have been to the fossil beds at Florissant and never stopped in Divide. We'll have to check it out. Thank you!

That's cool. The stand has so many different covers, most of them look good, mine is one of the worst unfortunately.

Nothing to fear here mate (except the fact that captain trips could easily be a reality) - have you read the dark tower series? That pretty much reads as one book broken into 7 (now 9) sections, the stand is broken down too:
Book 1 - captain trips
Book 2 - on the border
Book 3 - the stand

You could always read book 1, read something else, book 2, etc. I bet you wouldn't though, it's a surprisingly easy read, even at up to 1400 pages.

Gorgeous! the copy I am reading is in sad shape, but I do own a hard cover version:

I see someone on E-Bay is trying to sell this for 129 bucks (of course theirs is still sealed in shrink wrap). Mine is a Doubleday version but it is in perfect condition (5.99 at Value Village, I think?) :monkey:

1153 pages and can also be used to throw at burglars in a pinch!

I much preferred the uncut version. The version he intended it to be. I HATED, LOATHED the first version because it lacked something for me. I loved it when they added the stuff back in.

But, maybe I'm just crude and crass. :yes_pig:
...then we are classless and tasteless together...I too enjoyed the novel as originally written...the extra words were fine by me...

...looks like a repurposed copy of Revival...
Funny you should say that, when I 1st saw revival I thought "it just looks like my copy of the stand - dull and unimaginative". Thankfully, the UK version of revival is different too.

But mine is even cooler because it's purple instead of blue.

Even cooler still is the guitar pick special edition

Just thought I'd thrown in my 2 cents on the original vs. uncut re-release.

I first read the original and LOVED it. Re-read it a few times, and then discovered the re-release. I appreciated Sai King's foreword - "don't buy this if you think it's going to be a brand-new book." What made the latter version so much better for me is that is allowed us to see more layers of character development than the first. We never get to meet Frannie's mother or The Kid in the original version and they both add so much to Frannie and Trashy's development that after I realized what was missing, I really felt cheated by the original.

I actually am in the midst of a re-read now, and loving the journey once again!

I never considered whether the scenario was playing out in other countries--not the flu, I know that was generously distributed by us to the far reaches of the world, but the good/evil thing. Knee-jerk reaction is that particular issue was limited to the US, but who knows? If it was country by country, would 'the white' always win? If not, that's a whole 'nother kettle of fish. Interesting!

I never considered it either. But (now that I am lol), I think the U.S. drew the short straw. I think there was only one Flagg but it would be interesting to see how successful his minions might be in other countries.

I read the original one back when it first came out (the late 70s?), but now I am going to try the 'uncut' version that I picked up back in January 2013 while on vacation in Mexico!

I've only read the original too. I loved the original and I've always been afraid that the uncut version might make that long journey to Ma Abigail's even longer lol.

I wish I was vacationing in Mexico! I am so jealous! I've never been (well, except for a short trip to Larado).

We only went down because it was my oldest son's wedding - it was in the "Mexican Riviera" as they called it, just south of Cancun - nice if you can make it! (One of those all inclusive places).
I remember going swimming:

Everyone was in the water and kept reaching down in the sand and saying "look! I found a piece of coral" or "look - I found a shell".

I reached in and felt something big and when I pulled it up I said:

"Look! I found a hash pipe!" - I really did, and just brought it home for a souvenir, even though I don't smoke the stuff.
