Why hasn't someone come up with better ways to do things?

CLEANING THE CAT LITTER BOX

When daughter #3 went off to college, dad had to take over the task of cleaning the litter box for 3 cats (although that was my ONE demand for allowing three selfish, demanding, destructive creatures to invade our home... that I wouldn't have to take care of the litter box :(). Why hasn't someone come up with a better way to acomplish this disgusting task?

We have two cats - the litter box is in the basement and we actually have two large litter boxes.

My son is the lucky one to be tasked with cleaning the litter box out.

Sorry to hear that you have to do this. Have you tried using baking soda to help with the smell? We use clumping litter and he cleans the boxes about every 2nd day so it does not get too stinky down in the basement.

The ultimate answer to your question DiO'Bolic -- do not have cats. I know, that isn't an option.
There are self cleaning litter boxes, expensive and not sure how efficient they are.

Self clumping litter helps. Again expensive, but I know a lady who does this- she lines the litter box/ bottom and sides covered, plastic over- hanging side/then simply grabs the bag and presto, no scooping. Not practical with many cats and many litter boxes.

How many litter boxes do you have for the three cats? At least two is the norm.

Now, my question----- why isn't there a NO TRACK litter?

Oh great spirits hear his wish!!!
I swore on everything holy and unholy I'd never, ever, EVER, clean a litter box, well.......
My pack (pride?) of old barn cats were alway a total freakin' joy, they never even tried to come in the house, they wanted nothin' to do with it.
All I had to do was make sure they had fresh water, dumped a big bag of Blue Barn cat food in a cooler about once a week, gave 'em a scratch behind their ears every now and again, they dealt with sharped toothed pests and thought I was a god:biggrin2:...these two I live with, I'm just their man Godfrey:facepalm_smiley:

They say that for every cat you own there should a separate litter box. I used to have too few. I realize that this is not a solution to your question, though. Consider the following...

LitterMaid 980 Multi-Cat Self-Cleaning Litter Box - Walmart.com

ScoopFree Original Self-Cleaning Cat Litter Box - 1800PetMeds

CatGenie Self-Washing Cat Box - Contemporary - Litter Boxes And Covers - by Petnovations Inc.

Omega Paw Roll'N Clean Cat Litterbox, Regular

There are other cat boxes on the market which deal with the scooping and/or cleaning.

I wish those would work, but besides cost prohibitive they ain't big enough.
See I've got the biggest tallest litterbox with a lid I can find and it's still not big enough for BusterBrown.
He'e a way tall over twenty pounder and is known for peein' over the top edge, and his piddle clumps are literally the size of Nerf footballs (let's not talk about his other donation and just say we did, butt think small St. Bernard:sweat:)...I have to keep the litter box in a litterbox box, a BusterBrown spillage tray if you will.
All I can really do is keep a much smaller amout of litter in the box so he's not so high up and hope, and that requires muchos frequent cleaning, which isn't always possible given our current lifestyle.
Oh well, the things you'll do for pals, reckon it could he worse, I mean I coulda inherited a couple Shetland ponies:O_O:...well, he's pretty close:facepalm_smiley::facepalm_smiley:

I currently have three cats, though in the past I've had more. I'm very used to the chore and perhaps have learned some things. I have washable incontinence pads, which I became associated with while working in geriatric nursing. They are had for $5-7 each at eBay (in groups of from 2-3 to 6 to 12; free shipping if you look), or you can use the disposable kind, though of course the washable ones pay for themselves in time. I put on under each cat box and let the cats do their worst.

That's a pretty good idea, but my current living conditions would make those impractical..besides the litterbox in the litterbox box, I have a big thick rubber mat on the very bottom, then a thinner rubber mat a little bigger than the litterbox box footprint that I try to keep lifted around the edges...like a rubber litterbox, litterbox box, soup bowl:Oo:..o_O...okay so maybe let's not go with soup bowl:rolleyes:.

PatInTheHat - I know it is too big for your living conditions, but I've changed over to a Sterilite plastic tote- approx 26X 15 X 7 deep. And yes, I do keep a disposable bed pad under it. I have some huge cats, and this does allow, like BusterBrown to have space to get themselves in the box and still deep enough for a spray. Wally World.

As a matter of fact, one of those is what I use as the litterbox box (tried it as a litterbox back when I had a house, BusterBrown just laughed at my folly and pointed at the mop)...let's just face it, facts are facts, I live In a litterbox:biggrin2:

That's the same Sterilite your talking about ain't it?...problem with the big boy is, he only likes backin' up to the edge, starts in a prefered corner, unless of course JumpyBean had the temerity to corrupt it, that audacious lil' scampster what poops like a wee hamster, god bless 'er:encouragement:

that's it, maybe a tad longer? Most of mine prefer the corner for the sprays/pee. Such fun to clean up.

You could potty train the cats.....
