The patient who was pronounced dead from cardiac tamponade last night had been trying to make his life better, had quit doing cocaine but not in time to stop the descending and ascending aortic dissections. One started in his stomach, then another occurred at the top (ascending) and caused him to have cardiac tamponade, which he couldn't be saved from, probably because he had both a descending and ascending dissection.

This song reminds me of him, and I've always used artistic expression to help me deal with these things.
It just made me think is all.

I'm glad Sai King stopped before experiencing a cardiac tamponade: blood from the ascending aortic dissection poured into the pericardial sac that surrounds your heart and that's what caused the patient to die.
You have about 5 minutes to get the person into surgery. Even Life Flight couldn't do it fast enough.

He was lucky to have someone around him who cared enough to be moved.

Also, here's a lyric I often associate with the passing of a loved one, especially one that has died from a vicious disease or accident:
"We held our breath when the clouds began to form
But you were lost in the beating of the storm
And in the end we were made to be apart
Like separate chambers of the human heart"

(From 'Burning in the skies' by Linkin Park)

...any dissection of the aorta and the Coroner needs to have a pen ready, this is an awful thing to watch and my sympathy for the powerlessness I know you felt...as nurse, I've felt that more than I care to re-call...

That's tough. I'm so glad others have the passion (and stomach!) for that type of work, because I sure couldn't do it. So don't feel bad, at least you tried!
Over the past year and a half, I have had the occasion to use the service of our local paramedics several times. You couldn't find a more compassionate and caring group of professionals. My nephew is a paramedic, who has since gone into firefighting and some of the stories he told us are truly frightening. You guys have my admiration, love and utmost respect...
