Oculus Rift is a head mounted display (HMD) that simulates virtual realities. Whether it be flight simulation, combat run-throughs, or video games, the Oculus Rift creates interactive three dimensional worlds that enhance and heighten the experience for participants. Over the last ten years, countless researchers have experimented with the Oculus rift and have discovered potential benefits of virtual reality (VR) therapies for a wide range of psychological issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder or common phobias and fears. Yet despite all these incredible benefits and the skyrocketing financial possibilities in such a venture, this revolutionary device has been long hidden in the shadows from public hands. But now, for the first time in 2015, the oculus RIft will be released for widespread public use. What will come of this new device in the hands of the public? Will the public’s demand spark competitors? Then, will these competitors work and drive the device to improve and to evolve into something different altogether?

The Oculus rift is built from the same screens found on android cellphones. This device is really basic and is just the beginning of head mounted displays. Since the public release of Google glass, the consumer has been slowly warming up to the idea of having a monitor directly within their line of vision. Naturally, comsumers have grown tired of lugging around their phones, so the transition from mobile phones to headsets is a simple matter of producers designing a device which is comfortable and not overly cumbersome for the consumer. Once the consumer believes these devices can serve his purpose, he will be lining up at storefronts to get one.

But what’s most surprising of all is that the markets for HMDs already exist over a wide range of industry, yet this technology has been slow to develope. Gaming, training usages, medical therapies, and mobile devices are only a handful of the markets that already have demands for HMDs. With the 2015 release, the oculus rift will begin fulfilling these demands and then customers will call for a better and smaller version; thus, causing more competitors to chime in and fullfill this demand. If this trend continues, five years from now, HMDs will be commonplace in American households. Yet, as we’ve seen mobile devices revolutionize our lifestyles, will HMDs have a similar impact?

It depends upon two factors. First, it’s measured by the extent to which Americans find the HMDs useful for everyday purposes. Secondly, the other factor depends upon the suppliers to build a cost effective product which aligns closely with the consumer’s wants. Once these two factors are in place, there is no reason that could stop this technological explosion.

If you like scifi, then we are slowly but surely heading into a world where such devices are not only plausible, but coming into existence day by day! HMDs look like something from the game Halo. And this allusion isn’t far off. When the day finally arrives when HMDs are widespread, people will use them for practically everything. Mounted atop your head could be a three dimensional gps, an interactive virtual world that runs parellel to reality. Crazy concept to speculate upon!

Haha, I never even considered that. That's f***ing nuts. People will totally go porn crazy.
Using my admittedly skewed opinion of human nature, I'd say, if these devices become common place, they will most likely be used for virtual porn....
This one guy on a thread on sffworld told me he owns a low res develper headset and that it is the craziest experience ever. He said it's like going from nitendo to Xbox.
