Just finished "Natchez Burning" by Greg Isles. Loved it. I read "Spandau Phoenix" earlier this year, and wanted to read more from this author. Still have that feeling, even moreso. I have a lot of catching up to do! This book is gold. Can't imagine anybody being disappointed with this terrific fictional picture of the South of the '60's.

I decided i needed to read some of James Herbert. So i got four of his books for a cheap price at a used bookstore. They were The Rats, The Fog, Lair and Haunted. Are they representative would you say? Some of his i should try to add? Hadn't read anything of him before so this will be my first taste of him.

I'd say so. The Rats and The Fog were his first two books, and are generally seen as two of his better ones. You'll need to get Domain to complete 'The "Rats" Trilogy', and I'd recommend The Survivor, Shrine and Sepulchre too.
IIRC one of his personal favourites was The Magic Cottage. It's not bad, but IMO not near his best, and (again IMO) the quality drops off after the period around The Ghosts of Sleath (a sequel-of-sorts to Haunted) and Others (not to be confused with the film (book, also?) The Others; totally different stories, settings and authors). Nobody True comes after that period and is probably the best of his final 3-4 books, but it's only OK relative to what's gone before.

I thought the first 700 pages were great, but the ending left me annoyed. Mr Iles portrayal of the period had me hooked and I would gladly have kept reading about it. IMO, the end of the story was a real let down.

I was fishing around for something to read yesterday and found a copy of The Secret History (Donna Tartt) that I'd forgotten I bought. So far I like it. Her writing reminds me of another time--19th century, maybe--and is quite similar to John Irving at the top of his game. I think it's fair to say that Tana French's odd students in The Likeness owe a lot to Ms. Tartt's odd Greek students in this book.

Holy gawd! After reading Casual Vacancy, I had a dream about it last night. I never dream about books! I dreamt that I was the character who had a crush on the guy in the boy band. I brought him to Florida with me and it was going to be a hurricane there. We had this beautiful room. I realized he was Justin Beiber and also realized I did not want to be with a youngster for pity's sake. I was looking for a gun to shoot him when I woke up. Have mercy!
