I began reading I Am a Cat by Soseki Natsume today. It is a collection of shorts told from the perspective of a cat. And each of the shorts sort of poke fun and analyze people (at least of that time and area) in a way that only a cat could. All the shorts together make for a long read at a little over 600 pages. And even the newest of these stories is about a hundred years old.

So it is a bit intimidating, but so far so good.

So far I can say this book is very much a satire. A few of the funny bits have gone over my head and it takes me a moment to really get the joke sometimes This is very much academic humor. With some obscure references (for me, probably not so much for experts on 1900's Japan). If you find the stupid things smart people do to look smart in the eyes of other smart people then you will find the humor in this book agreeable. The cat sees these things and reports it in very dry, often condescending manner.

About a quarter of the way into Chuck Palahniuk's (Fight Club) latest, Doomed. It's a sequel to his last book, Damned. I believe there will be one more book to make it a trilogy. So far, so good. It's typical Palahniuk: good writing, nice word play and over-the-top, bizarre plot, but like his last few books, not great. Still, I love reading him.

I have been off thread for sometime (most of the fall) ...it took me that long to finish BookVII, The Dark Tower. But I finally came to the end several days ago. Say Thankya big big!! Seriously, I am so glad to have read this monumental saga. Roland's ka-tet will stay in my heart. I had no idea what I was missing. Wish I would have began it long before now, but thanks to comments on this thread I came to it at last. Better late than never. Have started "TheShining", which I also have not previously read, so guess I'm on a SK roll. Back soon, I hope.

I'm reading Fragile Things by Neil Gaiman. The man is a wizard. I love his short stories.
Have you read THE OCEAN AT THE END OF THE LANE yet? Positively the best thing I've read this year (cry pardon to Mr. King, but I can't lie about books). I edit for writers, and there is absolutely nothing I would or could suggest changing about that book.

Did you like The Damnation Game? I think it's one of Barker's strongest novels.
It was okay but I couldn't seem to really get into it. I gave it 3 out of 5 stars on goodreads. I only picked up the book because I liked watching the Hellraiser series and it was the only book of his there. I read it was his first book though so maybe in the future I'll read another one of his to see if I'll like it better.
