I wasn't in a slump really, because I had been reading, but I found reading to be tedious for almost half a year. I'm happy to report though I've just read 3 books pretty quickly in a row and I started Swamplandia! by Karen Russell the other day and I am progressing nicely through it. I really thought I would not love reading as I used to for a while there, but I feel pretty confident I'm back to my comfort zone with it now. Thank goodness!
I'm glad too,Tom. It's really a scary feeling when you think you may lose something that you had loved for so long.

After suffering from a weeks-long reading slump, I started The Girl On The Train last night and read 70 pages! It reminds me of Gone Girl but I think it's going to be much better (GG's ending left me feeling empty).
I think the ending of Gone Girl was brilliant. Left stunned to the core, literally.
I'm not going further into it, until I figure out how to do spoilers.

You might want to read through this when you have a few spare moments, but in the meantime here's the excerpt about spoilers.

You can either type in the coding yourself by typing:
[spoil3r] the words you want hidden followed by[/spoil3r] but substitute an e for the 3.

Or highlight the words you want hidden click the insert button

, and select Spoiler.

Not me. If I had written it I would have stopped it
after she came back. There's no way they would have stayed together after what she did to him. Or maybe I would have continued with him really killing her after she came back. Just wasn't believable to me after she came back.

kingricefan,
Have you read Sharp Objects and Dark Places? Both are as good as Gone Girl and disturbing in their own way.
Well, a lot of folks on here have said that her books are like this: the first 3/4 is excellent and then the endings are a let down, and after reading GG I don't think I want to waste my reading time on a writer who doesn't have strong endings.

That's exactly what I thought. Not just stay together, but stay under the same roof. But then you realize, that short of killing Amy or killing himself, Nick has nowhere to go. He's stuck with a complete sociopath and psycho for the foreseeable future.

Smells like a sequel to me.....

Ayuh, I was thinking that as I was writing it. SK's writing is leaps above Gillian Flynn's though.
Oh, I have no doubt about that (though to be fair, I've never ready anything by her).
The thing with SK is that he spends so much time with the set up, fleshing out the characters, going into detail and getting us involved, that some of the endings seem either rushed or a cop out. I'm especially looking at you...

I haven't read Dark Places, but I quite enjoyed Sharp Objects. I don't remember being dissatisfied with its ending, either.

Re: King's endings. I actually like most of them, aside from a few. (Rose Madder, Under the Dome)

Of Gillian Flynn's novels, I liked Gone Girl the best. Sharp Objects and Dark Places were entertaining, but a notch below GG for me.

I liked The Girl on the Train, but I wasn't surprised by the ending at all. While reading it, I guessed the ending and hoped I was wrong, but I wasn't. Still a solid novel though, and I'm looking forward to reading her future works.
