Picked up a book called Pandora's Lunchbox: How Processed Food took over the American Meal while grabbing a reserved book at the library--oh my goodness. Now feeling slightly sick and VERY glad that we make most everything from scratch. It's scary how many different foods contain woodpulp as an ingredient, and that isn't even the worst thing that's commonly used.
Wood pulp? Doesn't anyone read the ingredients list any more?

My uncle in Scotland sort of "chided" me for doing this, plus he thought putting best before dates on everything was the worst thing to ever happen. (Don't ask me why - maybe because people were throwing food away before he thought it had actually (gulp) "gone bad")?

It's a freaky, freaky book. Wood pulp is called cellulose on most packages. And the writer took a bunch of processed foods to see how long they would be good after 'sell by' dates; even 6 years after the dates have passed and being opened, most are still going strong because there's very little actual food involved.

Makes you want to nevereverever eat fast or processed food ever again.

I read somewhere that Dustin Hoffman's 5' 4", Tom Cruise's 5' 7", and Sylvester Stallone's like 5' 2"! Oops, meant to post this as a Reply to earlier posts.
Just googled--Sylvester Stallone is 5' 9" or 10" depending on which site you go to. Even with Hollywood sleight of camera, I had a hard time accepting he'd only be 5'2". :smile2:

So far I'm just reading this book and I have the mental image of Marilyn Manson as Jude, If any rock star would buy a haunted suit off the internet it would be him lol
Let me know if you still feel that way when you've finished. Have you read anything else by Hill? I started with HSB and am so glad I did! I enjoyed his other works but this one holds a special place in my heart! ;-D

No, this is my first. I heard good things about his writing, so I posted a message on this site asking which of his books I should read first, and this one was the one most recommended. If I like this one (Which I already do a few chapters in) I'll likely get his short story collection next time. I generally place an amazon order once every month or so and order 4-5 books that look interesting.

My brain conjured Gene Simmons for Jude-lol. Mr. Hill's short stories are really lovely, and one-Best New Horror-was one of the most distrubing things I've ever read.

Finally finished re-reading Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov (started re-reading it exactly one year ago... my personal record, I guess:0:). Still continuing reading Rose Madder. So far I like the book, though it's very scary for me, so it's going rather slow and I had to persude myself to cintinue reading a few times. Alright, I will tell my full opinion about the book when I finish it.

I'm with you - I do my very best to not eat processed food - and I try to keep it away from the kids. The husband is even more radical than me about it. But the kids love their Doritos and Fruit Gushers. And it's funny how they notice how so many things they eat outside of the house are too salty or strange. I have a hard time with MSG - makes me very sick, so I'm attentive to processed and preserved foods.

I loved that book - I finished it in a couple of days - which is hard for me because work and kids keep me busy. But I couldn't put it down. I can't remember what image I had in my head of Jude though.
