I was 'meh' on both of his others--interesting premises, but very derivative writing. Let us know what you think when you get into the new one!
I read THE TROOP and liked it, but I agree-- it felt derivative. The synopsis of the new one sounds really interesting, though; a good friend on Goodreads received an ARC and gave it 5 stars. Here's hoping it's good! :)

Just finished INSOMNIA, Why did i wait so long? I loved it! Just started Tommyknockers. Getting worried, i few books left in his back collection that i have not read and then i have to wait just like everyone else....

Loved Duma Key too. Looking forward to an oldy -- The Running Man (my last unread bachman book).
I enjoyed The Tommyknockers. I'm glad that you liked Insomnia-you'll probably like Lisey's Story, if you haven't read it yet.

A Long December by Richard Chizmar.

I am really gobsmacked by these stories. Honestly just sitting here thinking, "i never knew this guy could write!" I mean, I am familiar with him as owner and editor of Cemetery Dance, Inc., and I have dealt with the company for years and years. Cemetery Dance has been very good to me over those years. Good people. But, I honestly wasn't aware of Richard's story telling ability. These are really good stories. This is the best book I have read in 2 years, and I AM including Stephen King books in that.

The stories are short, well written, wickedly subtle and smack you upside the head. This is the first book in 2 years that I didn't want to put down to go to bed. I would read a story, look ahead and see how long the next story was and think, "I'll read ONE more." Before I knew it, I was 100 pages into this thing, and it's good-sized book and I have plenty more delicious stories to read.

Looking forward to seeing what else is in store for me. I highly recommend this book if you can get your hands on it.

I have ALWAYS loved an author's short story compilations more than novels. Always. I have said this a bazillion times, but it is still true, a writer has to write wicked tight to pull you in, develop the characters, situations and ideas, and leave you satisfied in the end. Richard does every one of these. I really can't praise it enough. Love love love this book.

Really enjoying the book Dana Jean! Thank you for the recommendation. So far the stories have been great - and just long enough. :)

Perfect length, and not always predictable. Once I got further into his work, I sort of had more of an idea how his brain was working, so could kind of guess what he was going to do with the characters, but not always!

Yeah. Gone Girl was a problematic book for me: the first third was astoundingly good, the second third was damn good, and the third act was a big ole mess. All of her books are like that for me. I think TGOTT will inevitably draw comparison, but it's miles ahead of Gone Girl, if just by virtue of it not falling apart at the end.
Totally agree about Gillian Flynn. Read 3 books, Gone Girl, Sharp Objects and Dark Places and they all nosedived a bit after the halfway mark. Just started on TGOTT but it did not catch me. Might be me. I'm gonna give it another try when i'm in a better mood.

I'm reading The Great Gatsby at the moment. I'm almost done with it. It's interesting. My previous book was The Catcher in the Rye. I wasn't too keen on that one, but I did like the ending. It put a different perspective on things.
I liked The Great Gatsby quite a bit, but was entirely bored by The Catcher in the Rye, even when I read it as a teen.

Truly. You said it. Perfect length. Safe spoiler.

The landscaper guy. And what he found. Did not see that coming. :O_O: Left to your imagination at the end.
