As far as entertainment goes, there are two scenes in The Return of the King (written) that always get to me.

When Frodo and Sam are trapped on Orodruin after the death of Sméagol and the brimstone is raging around them and Frodo says:

"I'm glad you're here with me, Sam. Here at the end of all things."

That chokes me up without fail, even though I know they're going to be rescued.

That, and the penultimate scene where Merry, Pippen and Sam are coming back from the Grey Havens and the two young hobbitts ride off for Buckland, leaving Sam alone for the last leg of his journey.

I suspect that second one has as much to do with the story being over as anything else, but goodbyes . . .

Well . . . I don't know if I'm allowed to say this here or not but the only thing that sucks worse than saying "Goodbye" to someone is never getting the chance to say it.

I'm very emotional. News stories of child abuse make me sob to the point I can't watch/read about those crimes.

As for books, the end of "Joyland" (what an ironic title!) did me in.
The book "Sarah's Key" (knew it was coming, but OMG the tears flowed).
Young adult books like "the Fault in Our Stars". And of course in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Snape's answer of "Always". :a17:

That post about the man who got his wife flowers...got them, the florists, to bring her flowers, set it up for when he died, she'd get them still...that brought a tear to an eye...my left I think. Okay...both.

A lot of things make me tear up. Moving stories, triumphs, even happy endings.

Stories involving child abuse, or sick children tap into a deep well for me and can knock me off my game for a few days. (I can watch crime shows where something awful has already happened and the focus is on finding the #$@?#$/ who did it and keeping him/her from hurting someone else's baby, but I can't watch a kid being hurt even if I know it's made up.)

It's weird, but in real life if someone's kid is hurt or sick, I can deal with it. In real life there is work to do, and encouragement to give, prayers to be said, meals to organize, people to distract. But in a fictional setting it just kills me.

I hate watching other people be sad when you can't do anything to help.
