Stephen King's nightly routine includes washing his hands and making sure all the pillows face a certain way.
"I brush my teeth, I wash my hands. Why would anybody wash their hands before they go to bed? I don’t know. And the pillows are supposed to be pointed a certain way. The open side of the pillowcase is supposed to be pointed in toward the other side of the bed. I don’t know why."

Here's what some other successful people do:

Most of us do the normal things like brushing your teeth, washing your face, etc. What's different about your routine before you go to bed?

Okay, bein' serious now: (sorry)
First, I wouldn't say I was exactly a successful person, but anyway...

After falling asleep at least once on the couch while watching TV or moderating, I wake, then drag myself off for ablutions. ( :Oo: none of ya business)
Wash hands and face, brush teeth. Moisturise.
Change into night attire.
Plank for as long as possible... this is NOT a double meaning.
Finish up online/with my laptop.
Sneak into bed and fall (hopefully) blissfully, deeply, soundly asleep.

Brush my teeth, strip to my boxers (loungers if it's a biting cold winter, but never a top), get in bed, turn on my lamp with the intention of reading my current King book, but usually check this place on my phone and read posts until my eyes start closing and I turn my lamp off without reading a page. When I do get some reading in, I often wake up startled by the sound of my book hitting the floor. That's why it takes me so long to read a book.

I let the dog out (and hope that he wants to come back in soon)

I fill the coffee pot with water and coffee and set the timer

I take out the trash and take the trash to the street on Monday and Thursday's

I lock all the doors

I brush my teeth (and flex a couple of times in the mirror ;-D)

I shut down my computer

Hopefully, Ozzy is ready to come back in (summer is usually not a problem but the cooler it is outside, the harder it is to get him in) and I let him in. Give Ozzy a cookie (Science Diet "Fruity Snacks") This step can take a long time some nights. ;-D

I suffer from chronic insomnia, so the last thing I do before I go to bed is take a pill. In bed, I make sure everything is exactly where it should be on the headboard: AC remote so I can crank it up for a hot flash, drink in case the throat gets dry, glasses case so I know where my eyeballs are if I need 'em, and my phone, in case I need to call for help for any reason. I sleep in pitch black, so I have to be able to put my hands on 'em in the dark, if need be.
Once I'm settled, I play a game of Sudoku on my phone. Most nights, I finish the game, put the phone where it belongs, and lie down. A few times, though, I've awakened to find the phone beside me with the game still running. Miserable solve times on those. LOL.

I wash, plank, smother my face in cream, tie hair back, get into bed, say thank you to who ever is responsible for making my today happen without any major hiccups, and often think of my granny and gramps.. And start worrying about the next day. And remind myself I made it through this day ok (My mind is like a ticker tape at night, it runs and runs and runs). The life of a constant worrier.

That's what my game of Sudoku is for. To let my brain concentrate on nothing important.
