I've only read a couple of things by him (both because they were offered cheap by Amazon and the premises seemed interesting). They were OK, no more, no less. Fairly predictable, but told with just enough flair to keep them readable. Both stories (and, it appears, all his stuff) had very high ratings and glowing reviews. I was surprised and wondered why...then I read about his sock-puppeting.
The only thing I can take from these antics (if true) is that he's insecure about his work's ability to compete in the marketplace on equal terms, which probably says a lot about how he perceives himself as a writer.
It's pretty safe to say I'll steer clear in future.

Him for doing it or me for criticizing?

His wikipedia page is quite interesting, though. Regardless of how I found the couple of things I picked up, he's made quite a name for himself within the crime genre - no mean feat really, when you consider how many people write/try to write crime fiction - and given how many awards he's been nominated for, etc, there's no apparent reason why he should feel remotely insecure. And yet it's there in black and white that he's openly admitted creating umpteen 'review characters' and has even sat there effectively talking to himself.
Anyhoo, Ian Rankin, Val McDermid, Lee Child and Mark Billingham have taken against him because of it, and they know a thing or two about writing properly decent books that real people want to read and talk about. When it comes to writing, especially for the genre, I'll pay more attention to those four. When it comes to shameless self-promotion and BS over substance...well, I suppose there's always Mr Leather.
