Me too. (Actually I do, too is proper.) I think you're absolutely correct, that prose sometimes includes words not commonly heard. Since reading sK I've had to look up a thousand words, so far; not that he doesn't write in a way which sounds real. But he has a great vocabulary and I wish to take advantage of it.It's good to know that it's the same for people whose first language is English. I suppose it's because so many people speak English; the more people speak a certain language, the more new words evolve all the time.
It's hard to say though sometimes when not living in an English speaking country which words are very common and which are not. I think in books you find a lot of words which are not often used in vernacular speech. I tend to have to look up more English words from something that's from a book than for example watching a movie or tv.
