They have already stated they are making just one film, with the possibility of a sequel down the road. We also know they are starting somewhere in the middle. Now, as Eddie was quick to point out, we the people generally do not like our genres mixed. So you squash all the elements that make up the Dark Tower in a one shot film. Which I am willing to bet will have your average movie goer who knows squat about the books walking out of the theater scratching their heads. The series will never go further. You take any of the Dark Tower out of order and context as it was written, and you are going to end up with big pile of "meh".

This will tank. Don't care how great Elba is, (and boy are they throwing that up in our faces) he is not the man for the part. Don't know how many times it's been proven, but your best bet when making a huge epic movie franchise, is looking for lesser known actors. That way you can see the character on screen. Not somebody like Tom Cruises fat head that most people are just plain tired of. The only way this could be done anywhere close to the justice it deserves is a cable series like Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, what have you. The ONLY way.

If by some miracle this is not a commercial flop, I will definitely get back on these forums and eat all the crow you can toss my way. And with grace. But I'd be willing to bet my next paycheck that will not be the case. So, I will not come back on and gloat. I'll just post a single smiley face and fade back into obscurity. Been a member for years, but I do not generally do forums, social media, etc. It was only due to the fact that this series is a major love of mine, and I felt I needed to rant somewhere, that I came back on. Last time was several years back when some idiot got on here and was trashing the series. I could not let that stand.

Long days and pleasant nights.

Yeah. I never really completely liked that image of Randall Flagg. I thought he should be attractive enough, which the TV version wasn't.

I still have not read enough of "The Stand" (and none of "The Dark Tower") to know if RF simply exists when he has to, or if he is born and grows up normally, or if he is different people, all living their own lives, until they are needed to become him, but I liked how we can see him (or a version of him) as a young man, sleeping with the guy who gets him the "Randall Flagg" name and papers. He was a sexy kid.

I do not know the dates of the events RF remembers to know if they mean he has been present in totally different times, or if he is the same kid who grew up and did all that. I would prefer for him to be totally out of time, and even appearing at whatever age. That way, I would not have to age myself up to look the appropriate age (I am currently 35, so I would like to do a RF my own age, even if less attractive than him).

Ah! I contributed to the derailing!

Er...

I love Mr. Elba in Pacific Rim (especially wearing his battle suit and walking away from the camera).

But I do not like characters' races/appearances changed.

...RF is timeless, so drawing him at your own age-or dressing like him will not be an issue...he exists outside of time and his visage is what he wishes the world to see.....

Think the actors will read the series?

Probably not. It is no reflection on them, but I suspect reading the series would put them off in the same way it does us. I've read several interviews with Actors and Actresses who said reading the book made it harder for them to play the part because the films and books were so different.

Well, didn't mean to quote the whole thing. Bottom half is my comment, top Saigrim's. I tried editing it but when I refreshed there were no changes. Oh well.

I see the original quote ends with an incomplete tag. The boards will add the closing tag the farthest they can. In this case, at the end of your post.

Even if you went and took that added tag out, it would be added again, because there is no valid closing QUOTE tag anywhere in the post.

Shawshank,Misery, and Stand By Me were academy award winners, and why? They remained close to the original idea..it is when they go off the rails that people dislike them, and rightly so.I don't know why it is decided to do this, but I would think Under the Dome would have at least given an inkling that people don't dig free license on something they care about..like the Lord of The Rings, they remained true to the original story in that adaptation,of course not able to include everything, but very close, and it is loved by fans of the books and people who have not read them..but the Hobbit, which went the way of Peter Jackson apparently ignoring the reason for his earlier success tanked, and was awful..as far as vitriol,I don't think it is that so much for constant readers as deep disappointment..

As a frinstance, how, how, how can you ignore the initial book, the gunslinger, and his decimating the entire town?! That would be the hook that gets into everyone, for watching the movie and sequels, after all he is the gunslinger..I am just sad, think it is going to be a watered down mess..

Well, with the die already being cast, there isn't too much point in going through all the stages of grief. We might as well save our ire for the release. Hope for the best, but expect the worst. My own view, and I have no inside information, is that the rights the Studio has to make the film are probably about to expire. Use the option or lose it. Don't expect a huge budget. I don't think they will spend anymore on this picture than they feel they are guaranteed to make back in Box Office. I am merely musing out loud, and not attempting to be negative. It is just a matter of looking at the timeline for the entire process going back to when it first started until now when it suddenly steamrolls to get going.

The problem, as I see it, is that there is no way they can truly appeal to the fans, nor is that really their target audience. This means they are trying simply to cash in on the Fantasy boom that has been going on for some time. The problem is that the target age the material shoots at is all wrong. The books aren't conveniently packaged for a Hollywood shooting, nor is the story. I can pretty much visualize three or four versions of the script based on what has been leaked, which fit a Hollywood pattern, but I don't think they will satisfy a general movie-goer and I know they won't make the book fans happy. I have no doubt that they are going to shoot for PG-13. That alone is going to utterly change the tone, setting, and story.

I just don't see how the subject matter can be repackaged to compete with the Fantasy stuff doing well right now while still holding on to much of anything from the books. To quote Tolkien, "Your quest stands upon the edge of a knife. Stray but a little and it will fail." I just don't see how they can effectively maximize the variables.
