But OoO, it shouldn't, honestly. They aren't altering what is set down in print. they are moving forward. Everything can be different when it comes to the Tower. The story is in print, set for all time. What film makers do now is continue the saga, pay homage to a great adventure.

Have faith young man. All will be well, all manner of things will be well.

I understand....I'm not losing sleep over it.....yet.............

And you spelled old wrong............

I see what you and Ms. Mod are saying, to be sure. But, I think, what has a lot of us upset is that we wanted to see the story that was written down so long ago on the big screen (and we still might see most of it - I don't have access to the script!). If there are to be other stories told on other levels have those told in sequels (or prequels) after the original story has been told. That make sense?

Course having more than one movie made depends on the almighty dollar, but that's another story....
Exactly, maybe on another level of the tower it is different, but to me this smacks of a huge rationalization for mediocrity..damn,wasn't going to comment again, but once again,I find I am miffed..gosh I hope Steve writes another response about the fans being miffed,I liked it when he used that word on the dome series..

I don't think this is rationalization at all. Hell...I don't want to watch the same level that I read about. I know that story. I was never fully satisfied with the ending (don't get me wrong--I appreciated what King did for me in that selfless act), but think it would be nice to see another level. King gave us quantum mechanics on a platter and we'd better take advantage.
Hence: "Go...there are other worlds than these..."
The possibilities with that one utterance, along with really the entire plot of DT, means you can do with it whatever you want. Which is pretty frickin' magical.

Right. I've been thinking about this (I know I shouldn't, but that's me) and I think I've come up with a better example. It took a while, and that alone tells a story all by itself (and not a happy/good one, either), but...
I know you're a fan of TWD, series and graphic novel, so...how would you have felt if, after reading the comics and having a fixed idea of who certain characters were, what they generally looked like, seeing what the author's (authors'?) original intentions had been, etc, the series producers had then cast Morgan as a white bloke?
There, as with Roland, colour makes no serious difference, but it does go against what is 'known' about the character and therefore expected by fans as and when it jumps media.

Now, I'll say that I expect Idris will knock it out of the park in terms of performance. SK was, IMHO, dead right about his acting ability, and I hope that was actually the only criterion used when it came to making the decision (I doubt SK himself was involved, but if he had been, it's 100% that it would be down to ability to do the job and nothing else).
What concerns me is if something else crept into it, consciously or subconsciously - a reaction to certain recent controversies, for example (yeah, the Oscars, pretty much) - because that's not the path to the real, true equality that all people deserve. IMO.
The bottom line for me is this: excellent actor, decent bloke (by all accounts), wrong role.

It doesn't matter at all to that role (in fact, they've changed the race of a few characters on the show already :D), so I could care less. But that's just me, and it took me a little while to get to that point about Roland, to be honest. I whinged. Knee-jerk reaction: "No." But then I questioned why I was being so obstinate. One thing I learned from having a good editor is that the more whiny and defensive I feel about a change, the more likely is that I'm wrong. Sure, we have a certain mental picture of the characters, but when you look at it from a narrative sense--purely story driven--clinging to that picture is unnecessary. I guess what I'm saying is that I want justice done to the story (which, if they're really distilling 7 or 8 books into one movie is already shot). Period. Good actors might be the only thing we get.

It probably helps that I've had a lot longer to absorb this than most of you and go through the stages of grief to get to the acceptance part. :smile2:

When I was here earlier, I was trying to express this and I wasn't sure I could without sounding like an idiot.

The book is as it always was. But the hope of a movie based closely on the book is dead.

As far as casting, how about casting Zoe Zaldana as Susannah?

You want to cast Zoe Saldana as an African American woman whose race plays a pivotal role in her story? Interestingly enough......

Nina Simone biopic trailer reignites anger over casting - BBC News

I've been thinking a lot about this too. Nina's family is not happy about this, and they are changing Zoe's looks (something about the shape of her nose and make up to darken her skin).

And aren't the characters of this book our family?

Reagarding The Walking Dead, Daryl wasn't in the comics. ;)

Idris Elba has been rumoured for the part since at least last December (maybe further back than that), the Stephen King tweet where he stated that he did not care about the skin colour of the Gunslinger was dated 11th December. The Oscar boycott controversy did not break until after the nominations were announced on the 14th January. I like to think it's just coincidental, I've not seen anything to suggest that any other actors were seriously being spoken to or considered for the role and that it all went for quiet for them when the Oscar thing happened.

But that's where the misgivings come from. How can Roland's race be switched without causing a different reaction to him by other characters, perhaps Eddie given that he is from this world, but especially Susannah/Odetta (especially especially Odetta, if you'll forgive the mangling)?
As I said before, it throws up some interesting possibilities as well as writing challenges, BUT since it seems like it's going to be a single movie, the most likely course of action will be to throw Odetta's white-hatred away, which would lessen both of those characters as well as the relationship with Eddie, due to running time constraints (and to avoid controversy, no doubt ;)). It'd need (at least) a trilogy to even begin to do all the themes of the books justice.
And no one get me wrong: I'll be watching this regardless.

Jordan: Yeah, I knew that. It's why I didn't mention him. ;)

Senor_Biggles: Fair do's. I hadn't heard the rumours re: Idris Elba, but then again the last I knew Ron Howard was meant to be working on it, so there you go.

Well...damn it. Who is captain of this ship? What I mean is, anyone been announced as Director? Can't recall reading any mention of that. Ultimately, that's what'll matter. Good director can turn any confused mess into a decent film.

Not promising I'll jump on board yet, but I might give it a shot if I hear the right name at the helm.
