I was directed to these forums in case there's an expert who can answer my question or forward my request onward...

I'm a horror fiction writer. I was recently invited to participate in a themed anthology for a small press. I write original characters all the time, but my idea for this particular story involves the early life of a character from Creepshow.

I don't want to be disrespectful, nor foolish, and I'm not sure where to go for permission on this usage. I have a feeling Mr. King was never planning to explore this bit character any further, and I'd love to have some fun with it.

The last thing I want to do is offend another writer by using one of his characters, or end up getting sued over a story that in all likelihood will be worth all of about $200 to me.

Thanks for any leads or information here. :)

Stephen doesn't allow other writers to use characters or places he has created in their original work.
