It was said earlier that forums are not that popular anymore and that that's the reason why there's relatively little activity - for such a well-known figure at least. It's surprising that the activity doesn't seem to have increased, especially after the release and success of the new It in cinemas. And there are more King-adaptations than ever it seems.
Still it was the same on the IMDb board of King. While overall IMDb was always busy, which belies the assumption that forums are not popular anymore, there also were always only a couple of new messages on that every day.
Maybe people don't have so much to discuss about SK in general. Or there aren't that many hardcore fans. Almost everyone seems to have read a SK book or two at one point, but it may be the people that are actually fanatic about it are still relatively few. Also he may have lost fans because of his later books not always being that great as his earlier ones. Although the amount of followers on Twitter seems to speak to the contrary - but how many of those are hardcore fans?
I always wish there was just a little more new to read on here than just a couple of messages. I check it daily, but it's more out of habit to be honest. I did get (and still get) a lot of anwers about King I might not have gotten elsewhere, so thanks a lot for that and the work that is put in. As far as I checked other similar writers like King don't have a forum at all.
And it's nice if you can help someone else find an answer, so it's definitely a loss when it's gone.

Very perceptive post...

I wonder if Twitter has affected things in this regard.

I would love to know an estimate of the current number of hardcore fans out there. And on the subject of Twitter followers: I don't think a high number of followers anywhere means that much in a statistical, economic sense...I am always amazed, for instance, when I see a YouTube star's number of subscribers and then compare that with the average views...it's usually a very small percentage if the number of subscribers is large enough. (If the number is small but rising, the views tend to outperform sometimes. Perhaps there is insight into that in terms of the effect of hardcore vs. casual fans.)

Just a comment, too, on the news of the eventual end of the board. Obviously it is a sad thing, but as mentioned, there is that other board we can use. I wonder, too, if there will be any coverage in the media (the smaller websites, I mean; I don't think this will make the Times!) . And might I suggest a storyline for your last Halloween tale: the apocalypse has happened. The last remaining people are, you guessed it, members of the SKMB! They discuss stuff with each other, all the strange things going on, etc. Then, one by one, they begin to go silent. Might be a fun one to do for the round-robin method and a fitting final story (although I would imagine a story like this has already been done somewhere)...

It's not any one thing that can be said as the reason why traffic has slowed but I don't think Twitter plays any major part in this. Facebook would have much more to do with it than Twitter. I just checked the stats and there are 5,036,768 followers on Steve's Facebook page of which 3,499 of those have been in the last 6 days. Hot Topics affected traffic both in a more and less way, i.e. there are some people who left because of it and others who only posted in Hot Topics so they are now gone. We have a number of people who were active in the past who have become busy in their own lives so only rarely post here anymore. There are those who were unhappy with how the Board is moderated and either didn't stick around or who just stopped posting although we (moderators) do still see some of them logging in but their user name is hidden from public view. The reduction of Board hours is also a part of it. We have considered making this an unmoderated Board which would then mean it could be open 24/7 but the consensus was that this wouldn't work as the moderation is a big part of what has contributed to the tone of the Board. With new members joining who weren't a part of how it operates, it could easily devolve into the type of message board that is seen all over the internet and we didn't want that and don't think the long-time members would either. It wasn't an easy decision, but letting it organically wind down and end on a high note felt like the better way to go.

In the grand scheme of things it really doesn't matter what the reasons are as the decision has already been made. All good things come to an end. When one door shuts another opens. We just need to find that open door that suits us. I for one am thankful for pleasure this place has provided me over the years. I will move on with fond memories of the SKMB and create havoc elsewhere. Just because the SKMB will shutter doesn’t shutter who we are. Look for and embrace new opportunities. Those of you who wish to keep in touch arrange some method to keep the lines of communication ongoing before the end. Find a way to keep any thread you wish to retain before the end. I just wish to thank Mr King for providing the SKMB for all these years, free of charge. It's something he didn't have to do and has cost him out of his own pocket. He, the moderators and the users have given us all so much of themselves.

And in case any of you were wondering... I won’t miss any of you… I hate you all. ;):)

And you speak true about SK giving so freely to us this "awesome" playground. A big Thankee Sai Wordslinger. The Moderators have all gone above and beyond.
And as stated-- we have a whole year to embrace and discover new things while still her. Shorter week, be still alive and kicking ( some with pointy sticks!).

We need your PT work stories, how many mailboxes will cross over , and what new torture will your wife grace upon you.
