US money went through a serious re-design (except for $1s) in the last fifteen years. Pete's father or mother could not have spent those thousands of dollars at the time without it drawing attention eventually, especially the Fifties.

Look for an old Twenty and you'll see the huge difference in design. If course it is expendable, but suddenly spending all those bills would bring attention with a strong hint that something was maybe unlawful going on in the household. The parents should have noticed the old bill and be wary. It could be written around.
But a small point overall.

Bodegraven - The Netherlands
I've not enough knowledge of US money. In The Netherlands we use the Euro since 2001. Before we used currency called 'guldens'. During the last fifty years of the gulden the notes only changed two or three times but notes from 1960 for example were still valid in 1999. On the other hand, when you are short of cash and someone sends you money to save your family I guess you're not that picky...
