    Hello,

    I'm at the trestle where Roland and Jake decide to cross it on foot. Still on the fence about the whole Dark Tower series although I'll finish this book and read the second.

    So, how does Roland get more bullets? He's already killed loads of people and doesn't seem to worry about having amino, is this explained later or ???

    Also, not wanting anything horrible to happen to Jake but, having read SK for years, am ready for the worst. I've learned not to get attached to the dogs and characters in his books... learned the hard way!

    Cheers,
    Lindsay

    Please do read the second installment (The Drawing Of The Three). It really picks up the pace of the story and sets you on the way for more adventures with Roland.

    As the world moves on, Roland moves along with it, so you would expect for him to have more bullets. Either that or he has them shipped from Aurora, Il.

    Can anybody help me? I have read 4/5 of Steve's book's, but the Dark Tower eluded me. I always manage to half read and then re-read bob and forget to come back to it. Remember this is coming from someone who DID NOT enjoy The lord of the rings? Mucho Gracias - Wireman

    SK wrote the book in the style of great epics like Lord of the Rings with some Wizard of Oz references...but it's meant to be a journey story. There are parts of the story I hated...it does take some tenacity, but most of the people on here will tell you that it's worth it. It's an investment in imagination that you just can't get in most books.

    And...this might be sacrilege but honestly, if you get to a point you absolutely cannot stand...skip ahead. Even if you're lost for a minute, it's worth the read to forge on. Once you're done with the series, you might decide to re-read the whole thing to get more details. SK catches you up at the beginning of each installment so some of the finer points can be missed and not have too much impact on the overall storyline.

    How's it going Lindsey? The thing to remember about the gunslinger is that in the grand scheme of things, the gunslinger is just what the opening few chapters would be in a normal sized novel. You'd expect a normal book to have the intro/setting established in about 30 - 40 pages of so, with the dark towers (going by my paperbacks) being over a collective 4000 pages (not including wind through the keyhole), gunslinger's 240 pages is about right as a set up.

    Booklover:

    The dark tower series is a lot more modern than the Lord of the rings, and king isn't afraid to address normal life as well as wizards, witches, demons, vampires, robots etc. I've never read Lord of the rings and doubt I ever will - as a general rule of thumb, I'm not a big fan of fantasy/other world stuff, but it is king, and he gave it western twist.

    Like Taylor, I didn't like all of it (2 thirds of wastelands comes to mind), but as a whole - brilliant.

    Oy = legend.

    I do think of Roland whenever I have a tooter fish popkin, or see a packet of astin in the shops.
    That was one of the funniest things in the whole series. I could totally picture his serious deadpan face as he said it. As for eating it, I've never ate it after trying it for the 1st time, God damn stuff is rancid.
