I have never read that. I should. And I'm going to re-read Grapes one of these days. I'm sure it was my immaturity that jaded my thinking. Stupid Joads.
You should run out right now and get yourself a copy of East Of Eden and prepare yourself to be amazed. Seriously. Really, do it asap. Trust me, please.

I will do it. Promise.
I know how much you disliked 'Grapes', and normally I wouldn't try to change someone's mind, but I feel you are denying yourself one of the greatest reading adventures ever. I know you will love this novel. I think it might become one that you will want to read again and again. It's that powerful.

I trust your taste. I loved Of Mice and Men. So, I'm going to give it a go!

After you read it look up the television movie that starred (a very young) Jane Seymore and (I think) Timothy Bottoms. I saw this on television when it was first aired, before I read the book, and I think it's a great adaption (for a tv movie). I can't picture anyone else playing Cathy, Seymore was perfectly cast!

I really do like Steinbeck. He was a great writer! My favorite is (and probably always will be) East Of Eden.
That's my favorite of his, then probably Of Mice and Men.

Have you guys read this letter from Steinbeck to his friend and editor? It's one of my absolute favorites (though all of his letters on this site are fascinating):
Letters of Note: A book is like a man

I have to say, I read "Travels with Charley." Debatedly nonfiction about his going around the country accompanied by a big poodle.

I was astonished. The depth and descriptiveness explodes from the pages, and this from a guy in ill health and fairly grumpy. It was just another one of those Steinbeck ventures when I despair and say, "I can never write like this," and fortunately, there's Mr. King to say, "You can write what you can write and still entertain," and I'm hoping for that to happen sometime.
