The passage from this book that sticks out in my mind the most is when Jake goes to a public restroom, wanders to the stream behind it, and notices the log over the water.
The log over the small creek was the African American's bathroom, essentially. Jake says something to the effect of anytime you (the reader) think the '50s are Andy and Opie, remember the log over the water.
