Heck yes, but it's a silly story! My husband and I had picked U2's "All I Want Is You" as our first dance song. It was on a new album that year, and U2 is Mark's favorite band. We get to the reception, and the DJ is all apologies; he didn't have the song in his repertoire and was unable to find it as a single (keep in mind, this was pre iPods, streaming, or single-song-on-the-internet sales
). As a replacement, he played Sinead O'Connor's "Nothing Compares 2 U". Have you listened to that song?! Not exactly romantic, but we like both Sinead and Prince so okay.
Fast forward a year, and we were spending our first anniversary at the wedding of a friend of mine. She and her new husband were nice enough to make an announcement that it was our first anniversary and had their DJ play a song for us. She remembered what had happened the year before and asked him to play the U2 song. Time for the dance comes up and..."Nothing Compares 2 U"
He didn't have the U2 song either (scandalous, to my mind, since this was a big Catholic wedding in Boston--lol).
I guess we can claim both songs, like it or not
