It's 4:30 in the morning here, and I've been awake since 3. I've been an insomniac my entire life, but this pregnancy has just made it worse. A night that I sleep through all the way is a rare night indeed.
So fess up; who else resembles Ralph and Lois? What do you do when the sandman forgets to stop by your place? How many home remedies have you tried?
Personally, I like reading, haunting the SKMB, drinking chamomile tea, and listening to soft music. You know, Hendrix, Led Zep, Ozzy...

With me it's not so much falling asleep--I fell asleep standing up this once, guy behind me poked me awake, military--as it is waking up after 4-6 hours...and then not being able to fall back asleep. Never tried any sleep aids. Bendryl...I think that might do something...think I've heard something like that. In the quiet and dark of the early morning I'm able to keep up with my paperwork...do a pile of reading...assorted household chores that don't make much noise. Wife gets up later...was that you slamming and jamming down here? that or if I'm tryin to be quiet I'll hear her call out, who's in this house! Feel like a church mouse when she does that...and haven't come up with a witty response as yet. She knows it's me and usually she's about ready to get up. She's a denier. Slap! about two beats into the snooze alarm. This goes on for four five maybe six times.

I regularly go one to two nights a week with no sleep. Nothing really works for me. I got desperate last week actually, after 2 nights with nothing and took 2 Advil PM (I know being pregnant you can't) was still up for 2 hours afterwards and only slept for 4 after that. I just make sure my Hulu or Amazon accounts are current and revel in not having to share the television.

I have problems with sleep too. Some nights are just impossible. Then i usually say F... it and go up and start to work, I work from home, and for about 6 hours, say 3-9 or 10 and then i go to bed. Using sleeping pills too sometimes. Tea does not affect me.

Careful with this. Are you using them under a doctor's supervision?

Yes. I know about not taking too many and not too often. But they are necessary for me. The other medicines i take have sideeffects and having problem sleeping is one of them. So i have this prescribtions for two kinds of sleeping pills. And that makes you fall asleep and one that keeps you asleep fore 8 hours. I try to use them as seldom as possible.

Good to know, Kurben. Thank you.

Benadryl (diphenhydramine hydrochloride) is an antihistamine, the first kinds of which tend to make people feel drowsy. (I happen to be allergic to it.)

There are over the counter supplements which some people use as sleep aids, but I advise you to talk to a doctor before combining anything with the meds you're already taking, or in case of possible allergies. The supplements, Valerian Root, L-tryptophan, and melatonin, are all available over the counter at most pharmacies. Some company I saw advertising a product on TV, which contains all three of these ingredients, but I know it would cost more than buying them individually would. I've tried each supplement and the only one which seemed to help me was the Valerian.

Crazy as it sounds, I find that running a loud fans helps me sleep. White noise and all that.

How do you sleep with all that noise???

Benedryl isn't working for me, but there's a Unisom with a different ingredient that seems to help. Doxylamine. If you decide to try it, read the box carefully. There's a Unisom that has benedryl and this one, side by side. I hate it when they do that. Too easy to grab the wrong one.
