Second of two thread themes, inspired by the (appropriate) way Big Bang Theory handled the death of Carol Ann Susi.

What's your memories of how well series handled the deaths of their own?

And, oops. Now that I'm thinking about it, I'm not thinking of that many. But the theme is worth it anyway, in my opinion, and since it's my thread, I guess that counts.

Hill Street Blues. The beat sergeant, the one who always signed off, "Let's be careful out there," had died. He was a beloved character, and they handled it horribly. They referred to him dying while having sex with his girlfriend. Now, as it turned out, that was reasonably okay in context with the character himself, but as a tribute to the actual actor, I thought it was crude and tasteless.

Sesame Street. The actor playing Mr. Hooper died, and as befits Sesame Street, it became an educational lesson of its own. I didn't see the show, but i approve of the concept.

Big Bang Theory. Already mentioned, but worth it again. Handled very tastefully, with a tribute to the actress soon after she died, and then having the character die quietly and peacefully, but appropriately mourned.

Barney Miller. It doesn't get better than this. No, seriously. When Jack Soo died, they had a tribute episode where the actors dropped their characters, talked about what a great guy and influence Mr. Soo had been with them, interspersed with clips from the show, and at the end, toasted him, raising their coffeecups. Jack Soo's character, Sgt. Yemana, had always made the squad's coffee. It was wonderful.

In Cheers, Coach died. I don't remember how they handled that in any episode, but there is a picture of Geronimo on the bar set that is somehow related to Coach. It stayed there for the rest of the run of the series. Sorry. I need to look these details up, just came to me quickly.

Oh, that's right! Is that when Woody Harrelson came in as the not-very-bright bartender?

In that case, the actor himself didn't die.......

.... but he sure killed his career.

(Tangential note: If any of you remember reading about Curt in the "Personal stories" thread, Curt's mom once dated McLean Stevenson in their respective youths.)
...this is where reading the entirety of the OP would have been helpful and less embarrassing....:hammer:....OK Alex, let's try "Dead TV Actors" for $400...how about Phil Hartman and NewsRadio?....

One that comes to mind is the Leo McGarry (Played by John Spencer) character on the West Wing. He was supposed continue being a major part of the show, but the actor died of a heart attack which changed aspects of the story. There was even a future scene that had to be re-shot without him.

Phil Hartman was also on the Simpsons. He played two recurring minor characters, though very funny, on the Simpsons and they were never used again. As for News Radio, his character was replaced with a new character played by Jon Lovitz. They tried to keep the show going, but it wasn't the same without him.

the guy that played Meep on American Horror Story, Freak Show has died. He got hit by a car. His character died during the season, beaten to death in jail. The real guy's death happened between seasons, so I don't know if they'll even address it.

I can't recall specifics at this point (I turned 54 the other day and lost a few more brain cells) but I remember the ABC soaps that my mother (and... ahem... I, too) watched always handled the real-life deaths of actors well. All My Children and the death of Ruth Warrick/Phoebe Wallingford comes to mind. From Wikipedia:

"The January 24, 2005 episode of All My Children was dedicated "In Loving Memory of Ruth Warrick". Phoebe died off screen on January 15, the same day as Warrick. Phoebe's funeral was aired May 12, 2005. The episode featured many of Warrick's most notable performances as flashbacks, and included the return of many of the characters who had been heavily involved in her storylines over the years."

Needless to say, it was a tearjerker.

I remember this episode. Wasn't Phoebe the only one who could keep 'Erica' in check??
