....great family dynamic drama drenched in testosterone and gasoline.....liked the unexpected ending......could almost feel the hot wind blowing buy and the pungent spent fuel vapors.....

Throttle is an excellent homage to Duel. Since most of us were already familiar with Duel, the family drama was a nice touch to keep things interesting.
The first place I think I read this was in the Cemetery Dance book, He Is Legend.
In my year of Cemetery Dance 2018 thread, this is what I said about it:
Joe Hill and Stephen King's story, Throttle, combines two men's style that is almost identical. While I don't go out of my way to try to figure out which author wrote which parts in any book I read where a partnership is happening, at times I would think, that's old-school Stephen's way of saying something or that was Joe's way of wording the situation. Word choices tugged at me to choose one or the other but it was a rare moment of doing that.
Great story. Great writing. I bet they had a lot of fun collaborating. I can just hear the discussions, mischievious chuckles, see the smiles.

I was impressed by how much (interesting) backstory got packed into this story. I remember the first time I read it, when I got a couple of pages in, I wondered how this story was going to make it 50 pages. I should have known better than to think that way.

I don't know if you read the story notes but the way Joe and Stephen ended up collaborating on this was that Joe was invited to contribute to the Matheson anthology and wanted to do a Duel-like story with motorcycles but didn't know anything about motorcycles so he called dad.
No, I didn't read the notes but I will. I love that he called in the big guns to help him.
Kind of like when Stephen had to call his brother when he was writing Dolan's Cadillac (to get some engineering advice on putting the car in the hole).

Was trying to think where I had first read the story. Thanks, Dana Jean - it was CD's I am Legend.
I first read this story as a kindle single when it first came out and had not reread it until now. I remember having a hard time with it as I had a biker uncle. He lost a leg in a crash when I was very small (his biker name was Peg Leg) and then had a custom Harley and rode the rest if his days until another bike accident took him from us. He was intimidating to me as a small child and a cool dude when I was older.
Reading it again though, it did not make me think of my uncle.
It is a balls to the wall paced story that never gives in until the end, when you are sitting with Vince, watching the fire. I enjoyed it much more this time around than the first.

It's weird - this is a book I had taken out before the libraries closed - so at least now I have some new reading material, as they are extending the due dates indefinitely (or at least until the pandemic is over)
