This pisses me off to no end. Every time, EVERY #&(&#%(&@#(% TIME, we get the shaft. American companies take our money very happily when we buy their toys, games, cars, appliances, books, software... But when there is something to be won, a lottery, a sweepstakes, a giveaway, it's always, always, ALWAYS US residents only. And when you ask them why, they will tell you that their 'legal department' is 'looking in to' a way to include other countries... WHAT? Like there is a law here that forbids American companies to include Dutch citizens in a sweepstakes... Please. Just be honest and say 'Hey, we like your cash and all, but we're not going to give you anything for free unless you're a good old 'Murican like me'.

Yes, there are restrictions about doing this outside certain territories. Perhaps you can convince your Dutch publishers to do sweepstakes so you can be included--just a suggestion.

I think it goes both ways, friend, I don't think if a Dutch publisher has a give-away contest that anyone outside of the continental Europe can enter. I miight be wrong, but you can verify that for me?
I can't. I don't follow any Dutch writer/publisher so I have no idea. Then again: How many people outside the continental Europe (Or the Netherlands, for that matter) will read a Dutch book? And how many people outside of the USA read Stephen King?

The 'legal restrictions' part was more in general, as I've been told this same line about games, electronics, software, computer accessories, bags, clothing... The list goes on. For a book, I'll buy it. For a game, or software, ok. But for a bag, a cap or a shirt???

Judging by the reception he got when he was in France and Germany, a lot. :)

Outside of the USA the books are published in the language of said country (except England and Australia). You can't buy a King book at the local bookstore in the Netherlands that is published in English, can you? We have a few members from other countries that are always saying that they have to wait for a year or so until a new King book is interpreted into their native language and therefore cannot read the book until then.

If I seem slightly upset... I am. But it's just because this is my life story for years and years now... I always frequent all the developer's forums for all my favourite games, and they're always giving away tons of stuff... To Americans only.
I hear ya, and I've been at the folly of that very thing. Bottom line for me... I have no control over those decisions, so getting pissed serves me no purpose. But I'm not knocking your feelings. Cheers.

PS I highly doubt I can 'convince' the Dutch publisher of anything.
You won't know until you try. They might like to see that there is a conversation going on here on the SKMB about this particular topic and they might want to have a contest themselves if they see that there is an interest in it. Print out the replies here and mail it off to them with a suggestion that they have a contest.
