I have to admit I’m not a soccer fan but I did catch a couple games on TV of the Philadelphia Union. It now helps that cable has a channel dedicated to soccer. Soccer has been slow catching on in the US. But in time that will change, IMO. American style football is still king in the US but I’m seeing a change in attitude of parents to small children. With all the reports of health dangers to playing American style football, especially concussions, I’ve seen a large jump in kids joining soccer teams. But it will take a number of years for better athletes and attitudes to have a major impact at the pro level.

I love soccer. Played it for 30 years. But it was always a more interesting game to play than to watch. Probably because sometime in my 40s, I started drifting away from the belief that sports are as important as we make them out to be.

Speaking in humanity terms, it's a great game. People, kids, can play it anywhere. All they need is a ball. They're not advantaged by being behemoths. It encourages skill, speed, and coordination over size and strength.

Great game. I just don't watch it much. And when I do, I prefer women's soccer. They're not the fall-and-scream divas that the men are.

But I sure would encourage a thread that keeps us up on the goings-on of a sport that is deserving of the title "football." :D

I'm mad about football but that's the norm over here. I've even started watching the MLS, the quality has seriously improved over the last 5 years and the
More and more young players are seeing it as a way to get to the top. With the money, population and resources available to the US if they really put the right procedures in place the US National team could be one of the best in the world.

I'm a big American Football fan too, some of the larger College teams play some games in Dublin every year and it's great.

Good man, what position did you play? You're right about the importance of sport being inflated.

The women's game is coming on leaps and bounds and is getting higher attendances.

...as the NFL wimps out even more, I'm finding myself more of a fan of college football....they at least are still able to play MOST of the game, the way it should be played....smash mouth and brutal....it's not an effete game for wooses......

I played soccer for like a year when I was 5, not even competitive sports then but just an excuse for parents to get their kids outside. I’ve never touched a sport since then

Watched a little soccer Sunday… Some Bundesliga thing. I watched for over 15 minutes and not a single shot at goal was made. Then the wife got on my case to get outside and put the Christmas decorations up.

Nope. Most games were on either very early or at odd times during the day.

Not knocking the sport. Just not my thing.

Ah there's plenty to knock about it, the ridiculous salaries, diving on the ground at the mere hint of a touch, the abuse and neanderthals in the stands... I could go on, but when someone caresses the ball into the top corner from 30 yards or pings a cross right on to someones head it just feels great.
