Netflix streaming seems to have a glut of gruesome little indie horror flicks, but it's hard to tell at a glance which of them are any good. (And heaven forbid they offer more than a couple of SK's movies, but that's a different topic!) Can anyone recommend some that they saw recently that they liked?

P.S. I just rented THE FINAL GIRLS on Amazon, and that was really good.

Nothing really recent, but I can recommend The Babadook if you haven't seen it and You're Next is pretty good too. Also, a non-horror but I'm just gonna go ahead and recommend it anyway because it's a great little b movie, The Guest.

I've seen all of those, and they're definitely all good examples of what I'm looking for. Thank you!

The first time I watched the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre at age 10. My jaw was on the floor the last 30 minutes. I remember walking home from my friend's house afterward, a gorgeous sunny day, and still terrified. I think I was too young to have watched it, actually, now that I think of it. What a disturbing, viscerally jarring movie. The sounds were roaring in my head, too. Animal noises, chainsaw, screaming, and other strange noises. I've never seen anything scarier. I think I watched Nickelodeon for a few hours to clear my head, ha ha. Not for the faint of heart.

I just cannot watch The original TCM, it's so very scary and horrifying. I gave my copy away. I find it a bit sadistic to be honest.

I agree. Sadistic and misogynistic, too, maybe. I don't watch that many horror movies anymore, especially those that revel in torture or gore. You can't get that stuff out of your mind. I appreciate scary films that are psychological in tone or rely on the jump scares. I fall for it every time.

very true. For me the best horrors are the suspenseful ones that leave the worst out. The films with story, character and build-up. Today's horror directors seem to revel in delivering blood and relentless gore, but with no explanation or back-story. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre does have a great atmosphere, but it's just so ghoulish. The meathooks etc...sickening!!

The great Lucio Fulci! If you dug Zombie, check out City of the Living Dead (a.k.a. The Gates of Hell), and about a million other great giallo (Italian Slasher flicks).

What I always find amusing is that whenever there's a curtain whomever slowly approaches and finally gets there throws it aside rashly so as best to subdue the psychopathic murderer or monster or cretin hiding behind it.
...or how everyone moves in slow motion....creeping thru the graveyard, empty house, spooky forest etc....for gawd's sake!-pick em up and put em down!.....if there's evil there-it'll just catch ya that much quicker!....
