If it's just a little mold on a block of cheese, I usually just cut it off and eat the cheese
Me,too. It is important that every time you slice off a bit of mold, you wash the knife before you use it on another area of the cheese though. Their are three forms of bacterias...the good, the bad, and the ugly. Good is such things like cheese and yogurt. Bad is samonella. The ugly is e-coli and botulism

Do you ever look in the 'reduced' section of the supermarket?

I have found stuff in there that is either best before the next day or with an expiry date in a couple of days.

If it's something I can freeze I sometimes buy it, but otherwise there have been times when I was disappointed in the quality so it made me leery of going near that stuff.

As was already mentioned, packaged food doesn't really expire, it's just given a date to be taken off the shelf and replaced by new food. Obviously if a bag of rice or can of beans is years old it might not be wise to eat, but 6 months old? It's perfectly fine. 1 year old? No problem. I'd totally shop at this store.

Meat, cheese, eggs and all that stuff is a different story, but I don't eat that stuff so I wouldn't worry about it.
